News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

So this pretty much confirms that lockdowns don't work, right? This nightmare just has no ending!
I don't want to spread misinformation, but here is one possible way to think about it. But, take it with a grain of salt. Even though the death number is higher, if you look at the numbers over many days, there has not been a large increase. It's possible that the level is plateauing, and may be nearing the peak. The exponential ramp up phase would see doubling of numbers over short time spans. Further, the numbers from Italy are strange. They have something like a 10 % death rate, which is much higher than elsewhere. I know they have more elderly people, but even that does not fully explain the numbers. So, it's possible that they have inadequate testing and many many more people got this thing before the lockdowns. Basically, what you see in Italy might be the effect of what happened before lockdown and the effect of people ignoring the lockdown after it happened.

Remember, there is a long time lag between action and response, so stay the course.

But, these numbers are horrific, no matter what the true explanation ends up being.

Some have talked about Ibuprofen/Advil aggravating the virus, and there is some talk from medical professionals about the fact that many who've died from the virus had Ibuprofen in their system. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but it seems like it would be an important detail and they really should be talking more about it if that's the case.

It's interesting because in the official sheet from Health Canada, Ibuprofen is on the recommended list of items have for fever, but by going on the reports, it would seem Tylenol would be far safer.

I read something similar, but I can't remember the details. It had something to do with their anti-inflammatory properties, IIRC. Of course, in the event that anyone reading this has the infection, it's best to consult with their doctor about such matters (assuming that the doctor is up-to-date on all the latest info).

This is easily the biggest thing since 911, it's obviously an apples to oranges comparison but the sheer scale of what's happening and the effects on everyday life is absolutely insane. It still doesn't seem real.

'We are all Edward Hopper paintings now': is he the artist of the coronavirus age?

Who can fail to have been moved by all the images of people on their doorsteps clapping for the NHS last night? They filled TV screens and news websites, presenting a warming picture of solidarity in enforced solitude – all alone yet all together. But there are some far less reassuring images circulating on social media. Some people are saying we now all exist inside an Edward Hopper painting. It doesn’t seem to matter which one.

I assume this is because we are coldly distanced from each other, sitting at our lonely windows overlooking an eerily empty city, like the woman perched on her bed in Morning Sun, or the other looking out of a bay window in Cape Cod Morning.

“We are all Edward Hopper paintings now,” according to a WhatsApp compilation of Hopper scenes: a woman alone in a deserted cinema, a man bereft in his modern apartment, a lonely shop worker and people sitting far apart at tables for one in a diner. As is the way with memes, it’s hard to tell if this is a serious comment or a glib joke with a side order of self-pity.

Don't give up, is my advice. Tomorrow will be eventually, a better day. Soldier on.

I work in the Aviation industry in Singapore.

Yesterday my company told all non Singaporeans staff to go on no pay leave untill further notice.

Any one who worked for the company for less than 6 months, has been let go.

It was surprising but yet actually expected TBH. We knew things were bad.

Luckily, as a Singaporean i have been spared so far. The Singaporean Government has told all companies to retrench or furlough non locals first. Leave the Singaporeans for last.

It could be all that, & it could also be environmental. They are a much closer knit social community, which could've exacerbated the spread early on, & I've heard they have a more prominent number of smokers in their society. A health complication like smoker related lung capacity deterioration for sure could have an impact on the death rate, I'd think.

Keep your chin up...the rainbow will eventually come out.

269 deaths today in the UK. Only two days ago was the first day the daily deaths passed 100, now it's already bearing down on 300 a day. The shit is going to hit the fan this week, if this trend continues we'll be at 500 deaths a day early next week and into Italy/Spain territory by mid week/end of the week.

@crookeddy Please don't post figures from dubious sources. Have a look at the WHO's worldwide statistics instead. They are reliable.
Their figures for today:
Italy
Confirmed cases : 80.539
Deaths: 8.165
Date of reporting : 3/27/2020

United States of America
Confirmed cases : 68.334
Deaths: 991
Date of reporting : 3/27/2020

Germany
Confirmed cases : 42.288
Deaths: 253
Date of reporting : 3/27/2020
These are the figures for
1) a country where the virus propably has spread for some time without detection. (10.13%)
2) a country where it just starts (and which might have reacted late) (1.45%)
3) a country that started isolation 9 days ago. (0.60%)
All rounded to 2nd digit.

I'd say those figures speak for themselves. Now, please, try to pull yourself together. The thing both you and everyone else need most now is composure.
You panicking helps nobody, yourself the least. Don't make the work of the medical staff even harder than it already is. Try to control your fears and think of those who are actually facing that virus every day, using all their strength and knowledge to protect you and your family. Think of a way to help them, rather than hampering them by spreading disinformation.

That you are scared it is perfectly natural and nothing to be ashamed of. But that's where we come into play: on TrekBBS there are people online 24/7. Talk to us! Give us a chance to help you. You have the world's largest assortent of therapeuts a mouseclick away. Make use of that. Act, instead of just reacting, that is the best remedy against the fear (suffering from panic attacs I know what I'm talking about).
Please feel free to PM me if you need a little pep talk or if you are curious to learn what day 9 of nation-wide quarantine feels like. My time zone is UTC+1, so a reply might take a few hours but there will definitely be one.

It is yes but I think we can still see that it's spiking.
Based on what I am reading online, GB has had one of the worst responses to the pandemic in the whole first world so far? Would that be accurate based on what you're seeing and reading about other places?

The USA has been doing pretty bad overall, but some states have stepped up. California locked down pretty early, so I am hopeful we might flatten the curve faster than New York has...
