Hot Linking

So let's say you want to share a image from Memory Alpha.

You copy the URL of the image in the Memory Alpha article.

And use the "Image Button" on this site to share that image that's hosted by Memory Alpha in one of your posts.

The Memory Alpha website will auto-deny any requests to show said image if the request comes from a website request that isn't from it's own Webpage because you "Hot Linked" it on another website.

I’d have them as missile tubes like Into Darkness…though they looked like torpedoes and were loaded just about there. SFB would call them drones.

Hotlinking is posting an image or content from a source you're not actually affiliated with, like Memory Alpha for one example. It's a potential problem because it increases the bandwidth that the source has to pay for, data usage from someone outside, and that only escalates if it's a number of other people doing it as well. That's why we encourage the use of free and easy image sources where posters can upload stuff and only have to manage their own bandwidth. I use Imgur myself and there are several others.

Technically, hotlinking is just linking to any image from a website not located on this server (TrekBBS and maybe TrekToday, I guess). Hotlinking from Imgur is acceptable, but it's still hotlinking. When the site rules just say "No hotlinking" they are incorrect, and you can safely ignore that rule (as well as many others, of course). I've argued this before, and I've been chastised for doing so, but it's the truth.

After 40 years of building Enterprise models and buying aftermarket arboretums, and having an arboretum included in the 1/350 scale Polar Lights kits released 18 years ago, and seeing all sorts of production sketches and blueprints showing the arboretum over the last 40 years, it's hard for me to imagine anyone could not know, or think it was anything else. Seriously not trying to be snotty, just surprised.

At first, I thought that the arboretum takes up a LOT of valuable space aboard ship, but then got to thinking...

For a five year mission with probably limited opportunities to get off the boat, something like that would be almost a psychological necessity for the crew. Plus, a large greenspace would contribute to the air quality aboard ship, and perhaps even afford the opportunity for various varieties of fresh fruits ands veggies in limited quantities, given that 23rd Century food services aboard ship were not yet totally replicator based, if I remember my lore correctly.

In this context, hotlinking means doing so without permission (as you mentioned in the other thread), because that's not generally the same as me posting Imgur copies of my uploaded content. I'm responsible for that bandwidth and for going by their hosting rules, but if I just started copying images from some other account run by a different user, they'd probably be annoyed at seeing a bunch of bandwidth getting used up. Because it's not my content.

Yes indeed, the earliest public reference is the David Kimble cutaway poster.

On the model it only exists on the port side. The Starboard side has the windows, but there is nothing behind them. the port side has trees, but the mounting point cuts through the middle of it. Fun trivia, the movie refit could be mounted from 5 directions. They used just about all of them while working on the model, but once done, they really only used the bottom and the starboard side. They might have used the port side in a couple of shots, but they are close enough that they could have just used the bottom mount.

I do kind of wish some more clear source images existed of the interiors that were built for the miniature, as it was being built. The arboretum is definitely at the top of that list. The shuttlebay, O-lounge and rec dec would have been good to have as well. Sadly, due to the production deadlines and other issues that plagued the whole TMP, project, I guess they never really had the time to do up-close archival-quality photography of the ship. I wonder if those interiors even exist anymore after several films of being rebuilt and repainted over and over again.
