Even if I'm only using it for my desktop wallpaper? Besides, it says "Artist Unknown" for the background image, which is the only one that I edited.

As for the others, how about if I make the credits smaller, would that be considered acceptable?

If its just for the purpose of using it as a desktop image, removing the credits should be fine. I do it all the time.
