I can see from 2:24 minutes:

1. Excellent production design.

2. Excellent visuals.

3. Excellent casting.

4. An effort to expand and diversify Trek.

5. It's epic...just very big for TV.

I know nothing about the story. That wasn't the trailer's job really. I can easily tell however at this point that we are getting something that is different and exciting compared to the 100s of episodes of the Berman years, something I wanted them to change in 2001 before Enterprise. Now it's been done and I couldn't be happier.

As for it being "crap", I'm glad you have seen the 15 episodes and can tell us all about them.

RAMA

I have no problem with how it looks aside from the aforementioned Klingons. Those look like prosthetic make-ups that would diminish or even conceal actor performances, and my knee-jerk reaction is that these will be animalistic and unnuanced characters, rather than anything with depth and complexity. In this one regard, I do prefer characters like the TOS Kang, Koloth and Kor as opposed to what came afterwards. But the look of the show isn't an issue for me, it's the tone of the characters that we got from that trailer, just didn't do anything for me, and for a show named Discovery, the trailer was utterly lacking in a sense of wonder or exploration.

From that trailer, I can draw three assumptions.

1) The show's going to be crap.
2) CBS need to fire whoever puts together their trailers.
3) CBS want this online experiment to fail.

It could be any or all three. I'm optimistic. I think it's option 2.

I see some of that criticism. But there are ways to criticize design choice without having you accuse people of wanting a cheap 60s look.
I really love the way the JJTrek movies have updated the old uniforms for example, without leaving the roots too far behind. Doesn't look cheap at all.


I prefer the STID Klingons. More facial expressions, less prosthetics.

The JJ Klingons are also pretty fresh. My only complaint was they weren't alien ENOUGH. So I'm quite satisfies.

Yeah, as a TOS fan - I felt the same way back in 1987 when TNG premiered - but hey, that era lasted what - 14 years and 21 TV seasons across 3 shows in the same era.

Except the difference is going from TOS to TNG is progressions, it takes place in the future from TOS. Here we're supposed to be going back to pre-TOS, post Enterprise. This looks more movie ST than tv, and that's fine if that's what they're going for, but they said they weren't. If they said we're basing it pre-TOS but in the Kelvin universe then I would say that's fine, that's cool. I would be more accepting of it.

I was lucky to get the full trailer ungeoblocked on our site (link in sig for the curious!). Thankfully from here, though it was a bit of a mad rush so can't even remember who posted it. All I remember is being ill and wanting to go to bed - wrote the post at 4pm and no clue if it even matches up

Thanks for that. Now I realise that I had only seen the Netflix trailer. On the strength of that, anyone would label this show a turd.

Having seen the more comprehensive CBS All Access (oxymoron there) trailer, I'm far more pleased with what the show offers. Except the Klingons. That's my one remaining bugbear. Hopefully they're only in one episode out of the fifteen. It's a big storytelling galaxy and even the original series only had them what six times?

Anyone who thought this would have any resemblance visually to TOS, this show is not for you. Go watch Star Trek Continues or New Voyages.
Anyone who thought the events would match up to the Pike era; this has been described by the showrunners and producers as a "re-imagining"; "a new Star Trek"; "a TOS 'Prequel' " - it's a reboot in all but name.
If you want to think of it as taking place in the Shatner/Nemoy TOS timeline, go ahead; it'd be much more accurate to say that it takes place in it's own timeline, conveniently labeled "Prime" so as not be confused with the 2009 film-series timeline, but it's certainly not going to match up with TOS and TNG tit-for-tat.

Star Trek is dead. Long live Star Trek!!

There is no way it could have ever been anything else. It's 2017. The general public would accept nothing less than a high gloss show with flashy visuals, moody lighting, elaborate makeup and costumes. Anyone who seriously wanted or expected Discovery to resemble TOS is completely off their rocker!

As I've just mentioned, it turns out that I had only seen the Netflix trailer. I suggest you watch that and then disagree with my initial assumptions based on that alone.

I absolutely love the trailer..!
I love the tone and visual style. I know it's not in line with TOS, but come on: part of the plan must have been to attract a new generation on potential fans, and that is probably not going to work with '60 styled props and interiors, etc. I love canon and I personally would have loved to see a series that looks like The Cage, but from a business and creative standpoint, this is a better choice.
The re-design of the Klingons doesn't bother me at all, I love their new looks.
The only thing that bothers me a little is the delivery of certain lines, but that is probably due to the 'out of context' editing

No problem I'd typically make that a members only post, but with the geoblocking I saw last night I figured it'd be handy to make it public - so many UK/Europe fans were left scavenging last night. An odd policy considering this is a global show.

Reading your post I went to peek at the Netflix trailer as I hadn't seen it and have to agree; not the best ad at all. The CBS one was very nicely paced, great visuals, enough teases and that far better opener. It was nice to see some different environments too, the promo might not scream exploration but it's certainly more than enough of a tease to show it's not going to be familiar space.

It had just the right level of excitement and left more questions than it answered. Not overly keen on the Klingon look myself, but they'll likely grow on me if all Klingons are like that now. And if it is an 'ancient' Klingon subspecies... then I don't mind at all!

It's a stretch to call that blog post "media."

The fact that Trek never had a proper musical episode makes me sad. I certainly hope Burnham can dance.
I also want the first dramatic lonely scene to be used for Burnham to perform an introspective sad song about responsibility.
