Hmm, maybe they cast her with an eye toward the potential spinoff series in which she'd presumably be a recurring player. After all, cats are very flexible, so it makes sense to cast a contortionist as the cat's human form.

If I'm remembering correctly, I believe I learned from folks on this forum that while the episode was originally conceived as a pilot, by the time they actually shot it, that was no longer in the cards and it was just being shot as another episode. If that's so, then they really did just hire her for a one-off.

But hope springs eternal. The whole point of filming a backdoor pilot is to use the studio's money for a self-initiated project you hope will become your next series. I think GR still wanted a shot at success, regardless of who said what beforehand.

I'm sure I saw a demo reel somewhere which utilised the non-Trek bits of AE and a voiceover to explain the concept of the proposed G7 series. There's no way that could have been made prior to filming!

It's possible such a film was made -- as I think I mentioned earlier, the 1967 pitch document for the series proposes creating a demo reel exactly like that. But there are a couple of fan-made A:E "main title" sequences on YouTube (the guy actually composed a pair of '60s-style title themes and hired a whole orchestra to record them -- they're great), so could it be those that you're thinking of?

No, this was a series pitch, with Roddenberry himself (if I recall correctly) doing the speaking interlude parts.
