Comparing life times of Enterprises

I always head-canoned that they decommissioned the Ent-A early because it was a piece of junk.
I thought it was decommissioned early because the Federation/Klingon treaty had a special clause to retire the "Constitution Class" just to screw with Captain Kirk over all the embarassments he caused for the Klingon Empire.

I think it was an incomplete refit for the A. It was either a recently decommissioned Connie, or one that was already in the refit dock. Either way, it was in the middle of a refit when the top came down to rename it to the A. At the end of 4 they took it out for a test cruise, found out it still had alot of crap left to fix, parked it and went on leave, and let Scotty finish it, even put in a new bridge module. Basically.. they didn't finish it, but it didn't need to be put back into the dock.

Something that occurred to me was this:

Enterprise-G is is recomissioned in 2402

Enterprise-J is active in the 26th century. This could be anywhere between 2500 and 2599.

So Enterprise G, H, and I must have an average service life of between 32 and 66 years.

Now, I can't see the G lasting 66 years, given she's already a rechristening of a ship that uses 20 year old components from Riker's Titan, so the H and I are probably more like 50 to 100 years.

Although it's quite possible there may be gaps between future Enterprises before the J is up and about.

I concur with your assessment that Enterprise-G should last a shorter amount of time and Enterprise-H & Enterprise-I lasting a bit longer given that G was already a "Refurbished / Refit" StarShip and H & I will probably be newly built off the factory line.

And given Historical Precedence, the Refit/Refurbished ships might not last nearly as long.

Actually, in TSFS, Admiral Morrow says "twenty years old." Most of us will agree that he doesn't know his history!
Honestly, thinking about it now I think that Morrow was just looking for an excuse. He states that Genesis was a galactic controversy, and the Enterprise was probably at the center of it as well. Retiring the ship was the best way to manage a political nightmare. I think he was completely wrong for many reasons already listed so I always took it as political excuse making.

So blame the SF upper brass for Politic-ing their way out of a problem by early retiring the ship & crew?

My new head canon is that the new technologies coming online around the beginning of the 25th century are the cause of the short service periods, but also the weird refits like the Titan/Titan-A.

Perhaps the USS Enterprise-F was being 'decommissioned' but not trashed. A major overhaul at the 15-20 year mark isn't uncommon in today's navies after all. But the difference is that so much will be changed that the refit will need several years in drydock and when she re-emerges the resulting ship will just be given a new name.

So Enterrprise-F could become Titan-B or whatever in a few years when her refit is completed.

Might also explain why we're seeing so many more ships with the lettered name suffixes.

Regardless, I don't get why ships would be decommissioned just because they're being refit, or why they would need to be renamed after the refit was done.
