Commercials that Fail

I saw a Burger King commercial that advertised Tony Stewart likes one of the sandwiches there so much, that he went and worked at a BK for a day. For me at least, this commercial is a total failure because I have no idea who this person is or why I should care that he likes a Burger King hamburger.

on the contrary, the commercial worked perfectly. the mere fact you remember the product and decided to raise awareness of the said product, in a public forum, it can be argued the advertising dollars were well spent and proved effective.
Unless Metal Pants then decides that he hated the commercial enough to go to McDonalds or somewhere else next time.

Two words: "Bacon neck"

I have a hard time imagining even the vainest of men being concerned about a slight wrinkling of their undershirt collar.

I guess that's more of a "products that fail" but whatever.

I don't like this Dairy Queen commercial...

The woman smacking her lips, saying "We are so baaad!!!" with her mouth full of ice cream is off-putting. And what are they doing anyway, reclined in a car with the kids asleep in the back? I've seen this commercial more times than I can count and I don't know what's going on.
I'm with you.
I can't figure out what they did. Did they just steal the ice cream? Why are the kids sleeping? Are they only at a red light?
And yeah..we don't really need to hear people eating in commercials. It's bad enough in real life.

My guess due to a comment the husband made is that they feel it's such a good deal that they feel like they're stealing, and they're trying to hide so that nobody can see them.

But yeah, terrible commercial. If a commercial can't get the point across in 20 seconds, it's a fail. Make it clear and concise and to the point. If people have to guess what it is the people are doing, it's a fail. I think advertising firms try to create something unique and memorable and get so wrapped up in doing that, that the point of the commercial gets drowned in it.

This may have already been expressed elsewhere in this thread, but I was thinking this would be a lot shorter thread if it were entitled "Commercials that don't fail." I seriously worry about the brain trusts that come up with most commericials we see today.

I must go on record that I LOVE Flo, the progressive girl.. She's also a pretty decent actress, from what I can gather from her stint on Mad Men..

Most of the other examples here I agree with.. The Burger King creeps me out, no end..

The ones I really don't like right now are the Carmax (I think) ads with the animals watching TV and then turn to the camera with a shocked expression.. I have no idea what that's even supposed to mean...

I used to hate the Kia (?) ad with the giant hampster.. I'm ashamed to say now that I've gone and downloaded that damn song (by Black Sheep)

On the flip side, I LOVE the "Most Interesting Man in the World" spots.. Many of those quotes have made it to my FB status line.. :)

Well, not my undershirts, but any of my t-shirts that start to "bacon neck" become house only shirts.:)

Best one of those I have seen/heard yet. appropriately during shark week. Announcer "Sharks have a week dedicated to him".

The Most Interesting Man In The World has been a great ad campaign, even though it should have worn out after one gimmick.

I agree about the Flo ads but disagree about the Most Interesting Man in the World ads. I find it annoying. Clever at first but now it's grating.

Here's a another "winner" from Ikea:

At least this time it's the woman being an idiot instead of the man. Though her husband looks whipped...

Flo annoys me a LOT less than that 'most interesting' dude. Flo is actually kind of cute, but the Dos Equis guy is just an arrogant prick.

These Windows 7 "It's My Idea" commercials have all been pretty bad. They really lose their resonance of being a computer "by the people for the people" when you remember Bill Gates is the richest man in the world.

This particular one is bad, but the worst is the newest one, at least in Canada, that I couldn't find. A college student is sitting in the hallway of his rez while his roommate gets "extra tutoring" and rambles on about recording TV on his laptop in HD. I bet you more kids would rather be getting the "extra tutoring" with the girl tutor than recording HD TV on their laptop.

I can't say the Winodes 7 "it was my idea" commercials have inspired me with... anything, really. I think the "I'm a PC" ads were better, esp. as a rebuttal to those insipid "Mac vs. PC" ads.

The irony of this commercial given what Apple is today is HIGH-larious.

Latecomer to the thread. I remember Cal Worthington, but he didn't annoy me as much as a local Seattle-area guy, Jack Roberts, who would always shriek "I WON'T BE UNDERSOLD!"

I was fine with Flo at first, but I've gotten really sick of her, esp. since the Internet radio station I listen to plays her commercials ALL THE TIME.

I still like the Geico cavemen, but I've never liked the gecko very much since they gave him the Cockney accent. I liked his original voice better ("Stop calling me!"). I read somewhere that it was Kelsey Grammer.

What happened to the chihuahua?

The commercials I hate with a passion are the ones that claim there's a great market right now for "scrap gold." If you have some scrap gold lying around and you need to pick up some spare cash, we'll give you top dollar! Listen buddy, the only reason there's a great market for gold is because of you and your stupid commercials. Anyone hard-up enough to need your services isn't going to have "scrap" gold just sitting around their house. They're probably ready to pawn their wedding ring to make ends meet. The only people who literally have scrap gold lying around are rich enough that they don't need your stupid ad, so let's just tell it like it is, shall we?

Similarly, any ad that misrepresents the plight of its customers. "I went to the doctor today, and he told me that my back pain is arthritis!" delivered in the tones of someone who has solved the crossword puzzle.

What's the opinion here about the Capital One barbarians? "What's in YOUR wallet?" I still love those guys.

What happened to the chihuahua?

The Taco Bell chihuahua was discontinued due to some back-lash from the Latin-American/Hispanic community saying the dog was a racial stereotype.

How a breed of dog popular in/common to Mexico speaking Spanish and saying it wants (Americanized) Mexican Food is a racial stereotype is beyond me.

The story I had heard was that the dog had died, so they couldn't use him anymore.

Nope myth. It was backlash from the hispanic community.

LINK

Actually, according to that link it says the dog wasn't working on increasing their bottom line. I had heard it was backlash.

Ahh, ok then. I wonder why it took so long then? Because that dog was part of the campaign for many years. It just seems odd.
