Commander Troi?

Crusher was able to handle the pressure of command very well while in the episode where the Enterprise is damaged Troi seemed out of her element, Ensign Ro didn't help her situation much, to me it seems she resented the fact that Troi was now in command.

That whole situation makes me think that there isn't much of a distiction between line and non-line officers in Starfleet (unless they made a mistake and Ro really should have been in charge).

"Thine Own Self". It was the B plot to the cliched story about Data's amnesia among natives. Timo Saloniemi

I read somewhere that the staff called this their Frankenstein episode. Data is obviously the monster who befriends the little girl and at the end the villagers literally come after him with pitchforks and torches! I happen to like this episode a lot because both the A and B plots are strong, IMHO.

I was most partial to that purplish suit she had.

I just want to point out that I named that very episode in the very first response in this thread. Just thought I'd mention that.

It happens. Especially in threads which pose an easily answerable question. You'll never get just one response. ;)

Ro also has a bit of back history in which she was responsible for several deaths (she served prison time remember) so maybe she lost her "command" status.

Also, we have to remember that Ro is in fact an Ensign which is a lower rank than Lt. Commander. In a crisis situation the leadership falls upon the highest ranking officer period the end regardless of the seniority or experience of the lower ranking officers.

My understanding is that (in the Navy) a line officer Ensign would take command of a ship before a non-line officer Commander. I could be wrong, though.

Indeed. Which either means the writers overlooked that... Starfleet does things differently or maybe there is some other reason that Ro couldn't be "in command" in that situation.

No reason why Starfleet shouldn't do things differently from the way we do them. It'd be kind of bizarre if military command protocols go completely unchanged for centuries.

Sure there is: O'Brien didn't want to take Ro's orders, so he arranged to run things himself through Troi.

I always felt that Troi's commission was likened to that of a naval Staff Officer. Rather than say her commission and rank were honorary, it's likely she just didn't go to Starfleet Academy for her bachelor's degree and maybe went there for some graduate studies... in that case, she would be given a commission based on her training.

I kind of relate the Bridge Officer's Examination to becoming an Unrestricted Line Officer.

It's interesting that to rise in rank from Lt Commander to Commander, all she had to do is order a holographic character to his death.

Heck, poor old Data has been sitting there for nothing at Lt Cmdr.

I'm sure he could have ordered a hologram to die too!
