Commander Troi?

James Wright

Commodore
Commodore
If Deanna Troi was a Commander why didn't she wear the uniform for the entire series? In the series first episode she did wear the uniform, but not again until "Chain of Command" dis she wear it.
Was her commission honorary when the series started?

JDW

She didn't make Commander until Thine Own Self. Her commission was always real, though. I believe not wearing a uniform was supposed to help her counseling by being more casual.

I never had a problem with it. I believe the thinking behind it was that Troi being in a more casual outfit might not be as intimidating for her patients as a duty uniform and would allow for a more relaxed atmosphere.

She really was a Lt. Cmdr. she just didn't wear the uniform like everyone else until Jellico so rudely ordered her to.

Don't be dissin' Jellico! He was right all along and the crew acted like whiny children!

As for her wearing a uniform, I prefered it when she wore a standard one. I always wished 7of9 and T'Pol had done so, too. It lends credibility to intelligently written female characters and the cat suits and skants objectify them.

^ Unfortunately I think the producers thought the catsuits would help to convince more guys to watch Star Trek.

I only wish we could have seen Troi in a cat suit.

Although the camel toe is a bit unprofessional, too. I can understand them not noticing once, but someone should have done or said something about that. I agree she should have just worn a uniform. Just because she's a counselor doesn't mean she shouldn't wear a uniform. Everyone else has to wear one. They just wanted her to seem like a warmer character I suppose

Robert Blackman could've used a lesson in William Weiss Theiss school of titillation! Theiss had a good eye for revealing sections of the female body that made it all the more "sexy," more so than those damned spandex catsuits of Blackman's. Although, Blackman's green dress for Troi wasn't half bad as it did justice to Sirtis's assets.

If I remember correctly, 7 of 9 did wear a Starfleet uniform in an episode sometime before the series ended, the episode had to do with time travel & Captain Braxton.(I think it was Braxton!?)

I believe that was S5's "Relativity" in which 7of9 goes back in time to the launch of Voyager and masquarades as a crew member. As for other episodes, if the Maquis crew members could wear a Starfleet uniform, why couldn't 7?

I always thought it was strange that Troi didn't wear a uniform, but after that initial thinking, it didn't bother me really. Her teal dress was a bit much I thought, unless she was off duty. And I do believe that they thought her not wearing a standard uniform was to make her more casual or warm or wahtever to patients.

I did find that I liked her better in the standard uniform. I thought Jellico was right in telling her to wear it as well.

7 was a civilian, she didn't need to wear a uniform, nor did she have one (similar to why Kes or Neelix didn't wear a uniform). As for the maquis they formed around a quarter of the crew of Voyager, Janeway wanted to integrate them into the group quickly so they wouldn't run into loyalty problems later on.

I always preferred Troi in a uniform. I think she looked better. To the same extent, I think T'Pol would've looked hotter without the catsuit, as well as Seven. Why is it that in order for the show to be sexy, the hottest woman has to be in a catsuit? Can't we find the woman just as sexy (if not more) in a uniform then in a catsuit?

What was the name of the episode where Troi was thrust into command because Picard was giving some children a tour of the Enterprise & Riker took Data's head to engineering?
This episode showed that Troi didn't have a complete grasp of command.

JDW

Disaster. And I thought it was an excellent show in that it showed the limits of cross-trained officers in a believable way. Not everyone is going to have a total grasp of every aspect of every system and department of the ship. Troi is a psychologist first and foremost, with whatever secondary training she had along the way (diplomatic and medical perhaps?) There is simply no need for her to have an intimate understanding of warp-drive and safety systems and the like.

Also she wasn't trained as a "command" officer, not everyone who holds rank is automatically "command" track. For Troi that came later in the series when she took some additional qualification exams and realized the "darker" side of command like having to order someone to his or her death to save the ship.

*shrug* One of my favorite characters actually because of this.

In a later episode she did give such an order, which enabled her to pass a test.
Good thing it was a simulation!

Yep! That's what I was talking about. Damned if I can remember what episode... it was twords the end of the series.

"Thine Own Self". It was the B plot to the cliched story about Data's amnesia among natives.

And even that course apparently didn't make Troi equal to Riker in command authority. What it was said to do was make her equal to Crusher, who had also taken such a course and was now cleared to stand bridge watches during the quiet hours - a classic menial job for young officers.

Timo Saloniemi

Crusher was left in command of the Enterprise while Picard, Riker, Troi and the other bridge officers were on an away mission dealing with Data's brother & the Borg.
Crusher was able to handle the pressure of command very well while in the episode where the Enterprise is damaged Troi seemed out of her element, Ensign Ro didn't help her situation much, to me it seems she resented the fact that Troi was now in command.
