Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Aide?

I don't understand how long time fans can view this latest movie and NOT be insulted. Seriously. Because they had a cameo of a tribble, we're expected to swoon? There wasn't even a hint of moral understory. Especially after all the hype, I was completely depressed after seeing it.

Since nearly everyone else seems to have loved the movie, I would like to hear from fans who had negative reactions as I did - why did no one else find the film insulting?

That's not the Star Treck I know.

Ack, I think my spelling gets worse with each passing year. :)

It is true, it is fiction... It's just sad to see something I've enjoyed my whole life take a turn that essentially just dumbs it down for mass appeal. And people used to complain when mere musicians "sold out".

I struggle to reach the level of self-importance necessary to feel insulted by a film.

Moral understories are overrated and not as important to "good Star Trek" as people seem to think, especially in the films -- for example, what was TWoK's moral message? What about FC?

Star Trek (especially TOS) is first and foremost a character-driven story, not a plot driven one. There certainly were some allegorical episodes, but even most of those allegories were simply a vehicle that allowed the characters to interact with each other.

I liked it because it was an enjoyable 2 hours at the movies. I though the characters interactions were fun and witty enough that I was sorry when it was over. I didn't need to drink any Kool Aid -- I simply had a good time.

Was it the "best ever!"? -- No, but I still enjoyed it. I would not call it a "bad film".

Like I said, come on. I'm trying to understand this for real. I agreed that the dune buggy in Nemesis was cheesy too, but plenty of fans also had issues with that movie... there wasn't the sort of universal frothing with glee that the latest film has triggered. The fact is, I thought most of the movies had their cheesy moments. Many of the better episodes had better plots... So I wasnt expecting perfection. But considering the favorable reviews, I didnt think I would be so badly disappointed.

The Wrath of Khan and First Contact both had a "moral understory" about revenge, of sorts. This film was also largely driven by revenge, but it wasn't as heavy-handed. The "these-guys-are-destined-for-greatness" theme sort of took over.

You chose to slam "Star Trek" as your first ever blog entry?

I'm a Star Trek fan since December 1979, at a time when loving "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", my first ST experience, was considered quite a crime by 60s' TOS-loving diehards.

Sorry mate, I thoroughly enjoyed the new movie. All three times I've seen it so far.

I read your blog, I disagree with your opinions of the movie, shrug. I thought it was great, good entertainment, brought the excitement of Star Trek back. Don't know what to say really, guess I just disagree with your opinions, and you with mine.

Your review pretty much sums up my feelings towards the movie. While I wouldn't go as far as calling it an "abomination" outright, I agree with most of what you said. And I can't understand why people praise it so much, perhaps there's some kinda subliminal messages hidden in there that hypnotize people and blind them to the fact that the plot is awful.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the movie. When a movie is otherwise well made, engaging and gives you characters you care about and enjoy, it's easy for a lot of us to overlook and forgive various failings of the plot. Nemesis was boring, dreary, and the plot made even less sense than this one. Nero's motivations weren't as explained as well as they could have been, but they made far more sense to me than a silly Picard-clone teaming up with this creepy new Romulan offshoot race we've never seen before. Data's death was so contrived and ridiculous, especially with the easy "out" they gave us with the oh so conveniently newly discovered Soong android which robbed the death of what emotional impact it could have had.

This movie gave us the heart wrenching death of a beloved planet. The reaction of Spock losing his mother, and the conversation he had with his father afterward was very touching and one of my favorite scenes. Kirk going from a trouble making hot shot to growing up and taking the first steps to coming the legendary Captain James T. Kirk we know and love. There's a lot to enjoy in this movie, plot failings aside. I'm not surprised it's doing as well as it has. I can definitely understand why some wouldn't like it, but I'm glad to not count myself among them.

I thought it was an enjoyable movie and it brought much needed excitement back to the franchise.

Sitting in the lobby of the theater waiting for the concession line to thin out I actually heard people coming out of the theater talking about how good it was, and it was a packed crowd. When I went in it was a packed crowd and people were laughing clapping and cheering during the movie, clapping at the end. Not a single Trek movie that I've ever went to has had this sort of reaction. I'm pleased.
