Cold Fusion? US Navy says "maybe"

I'll believe it when I see it... :vulcan:

Hey don't knock the Navy. They have railguns now.

And the next carrier will have an electromagnetic launch system for launching aircraft, as opposed to steam.

When it comes to R&D, the Navy is very, very serious about results. If one reads the article carefully, it appears that a barrier has been broken to better understand cold fusion and what it will take to develop. That's a stepping stone.

This is quite fascinating. Such fusion reactors would be far more practical than fission reactors. The biggest advantage is the fact that you don't have to dispose of all those fuel-rods...

There is a reason why starfleet is based on the US navy. :techman:

Oh, no doubt. But it's ... Cold fusion.

The article listed has some measure of skepticism to it.

The Article said:
Paul Padley, a physicist at Rice University who reviewed Mosier-Boss's published work, said the study did not provide a plausible explanation of how cold fusion could take place in the conditions described.
"It fails to provide a theoretical rationale to explain how fusion could occur at room temperatures. And in its analysis, the research paper fails to exclude other sources for the production of neutrons," he told the Houston Chronicle.

Anyone remember the claims about cold fusion a few years back? if the U.S Navy is onto something then it could either prove the claims (which I don't believe were ever proven) or show they were lying but at the same time proving that it's possible (practicallity would be the next issue)

Reminds me of the times the Navy ran headlines "maybe" man can spacewalk...after Russia put dogs in space and after the Navy produced some embarrassing "flopniks"

Cold fusion...welcome to the 21st century

Wow the Navy finally woke up

Actually the Navy tried and failed before and now is back into the game a little late and trailing way behind While a bunch of freelance American scientsist, Japanese and French are mastering it in some corporate/government funded international lab called ITER >>> It's already producing promising results

Reagan gave the Navy a few billion for cold fusion back in the late 1980s and they just wasted it. Most of the stuff was done from California, and since the Navy couldn't think of a way to produce a cold fusion weaponized system they soon abandoned it...perhaps California's history of poor budget management contributed to the project's downfall

So, are you saying that it's impossible for an advancement to have been made? Gotta learn to crawl before walking, and then master walking before running.

After all, the atom was split in the late 1930's/early 1940's. :vulcan:

Making cold fusion work would be...well...cool.

By the way John Picard, big ups on the avatar - true LOL material. Who knows, McCain might have done better with Michael instead of Sarah.
