Coincidence or forshadowing?

In early John Locke flashbacks we see him drying a Volkswagen beetle, then later on we see that on the island Dharma used Volkswagen Camper vans.

Was this the writers tipping the hat to the idea that John was meant to lead the others?

My guess is no, it's just that both are easily recognized as retro by a large portion of the audience.

And I'm sure Volkswagen pays some good money to have their vehicles in the show.

VW's were very popular at that time. It's just evocative of the time.

I think it's just the iconic status too, plus the identification of VW vans and the hippy vibe Dharma exudes...

...anything else is just farfegnugen.
