Suppose you were part of a group of people who were going to climb a big tree in the middle of the woods. How do you approach the challenge?

(a) I'm the sort of person who looks up, and tries to get to the top of the tree before anyone else, so am really only interested in who is in front of me.

(b) I'm the sort of person who looks down, and tries to ensure that no-one is left behind, only really interested in who is behind me.

(c) I'm the sort of person who tags onto one or two others and we stay together while climbing the tree. I'm only really interested in where us two/three are relative to each other.

(d) I'm the sort of person who climbs the tree independently of others and I go at my own preferred pace, and am only interested in my own progress.

d) I guess

My biggest concern here would be not to kill myself, and not how everybody else is doing. And how many people could climb up a tree simultaneously anyway?

I don't think it's so much that I'm an individual as it is I'm trying very hard not to fall out of the tree...:)

I see what you did there.

I don't do climbing trees.

I do, however, love to go hillwalking. Yet when I go among peers, I tend to be the one lagging behind all the others while trying to keep up, and they end up waiting for me. :sigh:

Are you accumulating profiles on all the posters here to see which type of character each one of us is? :p

I don't really know which category I'd fall into, depends why we're climbing the tree, I suppose. As it is, whatever answer I give won't be very accurate.

Heh. I'll probably be studying the resistance and structural integrity of the trunk and branches of the tree, ensuring its stability of all those fools who started climbing without checking that first. Not that they will ever thank me for that, eh?

More seriously (just for the sake of it), I'll say d. I am much more interested in my own path and progress than in anybody else's. That may change if there will be people I'm already very close to (family, loved ones, lifelong friends), in that case it would be c. I'm neither very competitive or very empathetic, so a and b are out of question for me.

I love climbing trees! I'd still do it if there were any decent maples or oaks around (they're the best :D)

I find it interesting how we all perceive the world differently, and how our perceptions become woven into our personalities. I feel that polls like this can help us to understand one another. :)

Because it's there. :p

If this is a metaphorical tree, then I at least aspire to be a B sort of person. (Though with patches of A,C and D so long as I'm not upsetting anybody else).

However, if this were an actual tree then I'd rather wait until everybody else has gone home, or go find a different tree. Tree-climbing is not a large-group activity.:p

Hmm... nothing of the above truly fits me.
I would not want to climb to the top, but pick myself a nice big lower brench..brunch..whatever the word... to sit on. Or I would have a picknick under the tree with the people reading. ;)
However I certainly would look at the ones climbing up higher, because its interessting and would ask them how far they can see and if their is someone behind me I would pay attention if he or she needs any help, at least as far as I could help them.
And if their would be many people I would like to have at least a smaller group around me, that I can talk to and that pays attention for each other, but still I´d like to individually choose my sitting place, the one I like and also have time on my own. And if someone of the bigger group is in trouble I would not look away either.

Hmm... no option for "holding the coats of those who climb"

Given my own lack of confidence at climbing I would definitely be last - ready to give a push to get everyone else started. And hopefully someone would throw me a rope :)

Actually thinking about it some more - for tree climbing, what I'd hope for is to be in a group that organised itself first - a few of the able climbers up front to navigate a path, everyone else up in the middle with able climbers interspersed to give aid, and a last set of able (and strong) climbers to give anyone who is stuck a boost up.

If you need to get everyone in this group up the tree - that's how I'd do it.

btw - TerokNor, close - it's "branch"

^ I wish trees had brunches on them. That would be awesome. :D

In real life, I don't climb trees because my climbing ability is atrocious, but in the interests of the poll, I'll answer C.

Yeah, I'd probably climb if someone offered me a bacon sarnie at the top!

Someone should do a psychological study into why very few of us are willing to answer a multi-choice question using the answers provided
