Spoilers "Classical Music"

I rewatched the first trailer after watching the movie last night, and it really did make me smile.

One of the problems I've always had with Trek was all the music the various crews listened to was either classical, croaner, or jazz. That seems really boring. I'm glad in the future people might still be listening to something like the Beastie Boys, or just hard rock in general.

speaking of music, for those of you that purchased the soundtrack which of the themes was your favorite and which one was your least favorite?

I loved A Lesson in Vulcan Mineralogy and Night on the Yorktown. I'm not sure I have a least favorite yet (Only heard the album once), but the long "Hitting the Saucer a little Hard" seemed to drag a little bit.

Of course, if the Beastie Boys are considered "classical music" doesn't that just make it all the more silly Kirk was playing Sabotage when he stole his drunk uncle's car? After all, teenage punks today do not steal cars blaring Mozart or Beethoven.

I don't know which is more cringe inducing, this scene or the one in Insurrection where they are singing at Data to get him in control.

^ The answer is Insurrection. Always Insurrection.
Even if it's not the question.

Really nice scene sold by the smirk. Hit a few good (non musical!) notes in that moment.

I was also really surprised and amused by Jaylah's first radio scene - perfect choice!

Unless, of course, it's something pop culture uses a lot, e.g., 1812 Overture...

"Paganini makes me dangerous in traffic."
— Yngwie Malmsteen (in some ancient interview I remember reading)

The Kirk Smirk™ was perfect, right up there with the look he gives Scotty when he says "we cannae just jumpstart her." The moment Yorktown begins transmitting syncing up with that particular moment in Sabotage was also pretty awesome. But I'm just a 30 year old whippersnapper so what do I know? ;)

As for the score, "Night on the Yorktown" gives me some major goosebumps. I'd have loved for it to have been part of the Ultimate Voyage event at the SF Symphony I attended last week. Pretty sure I used up a good month's supply of goosebumps.

Hell, this joke was kind of done in a TOS novel released a few years back featuring a 21st century astronaut transported on board the Enterprise. His inner monologue has him musing "these people probably consider Lady Gaga classical music."

Guilty as charged. That was my novel, The Rings of Time, and, as I recall, at least one reader objected to that line . . . :)

I think I remember that from the review thread, something about how music meet a certain criteria to be considered "classical" and that it doesn't get labeled to everything that's over a hundred years old.

I wonder how they feel about Beastie Boys now being canonically classical music?

Am I the only one who really likes that scene in Insurrection?

The classical music bit was good. I do think they went a bit overboard with that whole sequence and all the explosions, but they played it much better than I was expecting.

Unfortunately the fact that Insurrection is loaded with all kinds of cutesy jokes works to its detriment. Had the Gilbert and Sullivan scene been the only scene with such silliness in the movie it might have been more fondly remembered.

But, yeah, it is a nice scene. I always like the shot of the shuttles flying formation with the song being sung.

Hang out with a lot of car stealing teenage ages punks, do you?

Punks prefer Beethoven anyway.
