Classic Who DVD Sources

I got my son, age 13, hooked on NuWho and a friend gave me a couple of Tom Baker episodes which he also loved. He is very much interested in the older stories with the previous Doctors, so I'm looking for a source where I can get a good number of the Classic Who. After all, that would make a most excellent Christmas present ;)

If it makes a difference, I'm in the US.

I usually always recommend Amazon. I've found 99.9% of the time, they're cheaper than buying them in a store and they have, as far as I can tell, everything that's currently available.

The best prices I've found in terms of online shopping are at Deep Discount. The shipping can be a little slow, but it doesn't sound like speedy delivery is a major factor for you. The only drawback is that apparently their customer service is quite poor, so if something goes wrong with the order you might have trouble getting it resolved. I've never had a problem myself, but maybe I've just been lucky.

I second the recommendation to Deep Discount. The only time I had to deal with customer service was to send back the first season of House because one of the disks was faulty (largely because they were double-sided) and I had to do that three times over and still managed to get one disc were the episode skipped a bit (fortunately it was an episode I didn't care for, so I just gave up). With Deep Discount, you have to send the whole set back, whereas with Amazon (at least, this is what I've heard because I've never had to do it myself) you only need to send the faulty disc.

That being said, it's often more cheaper to buy from Deep Discount (especially for the Doctor Who boxsets like The Key of Time and New Beginnings) with free shipping (as long you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks).

I also recommend DeepDiscount.com ... However, there's a "but" in there.

They normally have prices comparable with other online discount etailers. However, in June and November of each year, they have a 20% off sale. This applies to all dvds that are currently released (as in, no pre-orders, but yes to everything else). A 20 buck dvd suddenly becomes 16. This adds up quickly if you're buying a number of titles.

This past June I went from 5 or so Who dvds up to about 40, thanks to that sale. If I do it right come November, I should be able to get most every other Classic Who dvd release.

That all depends on your level of patience. If you need it "right now" then by all means, order now. Just saying you could get more for your money if you wait til November.

Agreed. While they are the "McDonald's" of online shopping, I've always found them to be relatively cheap, and ship as quickly as you want to pay for. Haven't had a problem with them, and their selection is pretty much everything released in the US market today, including pre-orders for upcoming releases...

I'm inclined to use Amazon as I have a friend with an Amazon account and as such, I believe he receives points for frequent orders, so when he orders for me I'm helping him in the long run.

Thank you for the tip! You wouldn't happen to know if they ship to Sweden do you? (I know I know.. i should go there and check for myself.. but then i would get all disappointed if i found a buncha stuff i wanted and they dont want to accommodate me..)

Sorry, there is no such thing. Anyone can have an "account" with Amazon. It's free to sign up, and all it does is store your address and, if you tell them to, your credit card number.

There's no such thing as "points" on Amazon, nor do people who order frequently get anything beyond what anyone else gets (other than, of course, more "stuff" they've paid for).

They ship worldwide. Please keep in mind, they have only Region 1 dvds, and international shipping gets very expensive with taxes and stuff added on top. Their free shipping is USA only.

Hmm, I could have sworn he got something out of it. Oh well, I don't care for Amazon to have my info so that may have been my reasoning for going through him. Either way, he gets good status as a frequent buyer.

Your friend probably has the Amazon Rewards Visa Card account with them. You get some items cheaper, and he gets reward points in return. It's right there on the site...

Amazon is usually the cheapest and easiest. If you don't mind watching on your computer, iTunes has lots of inexpensive episodes, at least a dozen of which aren't on DVD.

Anyone else use dvdpricesearch.com? It's a good tool to find out what legitimate etailers have the best prices, and you can compare multiple titles at the same time to find the best deal.
