Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or No?

You do think there should have been more moments of bonding or hanging out between them?

Do you think more time should have been spent on them being friends before the rift between them occurred?

Do you think the rift should have happened at all?

Or do the audience would have satisfied with the impending rift left hanging by the end of the series but with seeds of it already sown and cracks beginning to emerge in the friendship giving us a sense of foreboding over the two of them?

Do you think Lana should have an issue that played a role in the friends' estrangement?

This is for all of you Smallville viewers, bitter or otherwise.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

I think it was handled well enough in the early seasons (1-5). I think the differences in age and life styles made hanging out perhaps a bit awkward so I think the Smallville writers handled the Clark and Lex interaction well in that regard, keeping socializing minimal.

I had no problem with Lana being one of the reasons for the Clark and Lex split. Guys fighting over women happens frequently, and Lex wanting something that Clark 'possessed' fit in with his desire to have the family life/support that the Kents had.

I think that Lex should've went definitely darkside earlier in the series, and as much as I like Lionel Luthor, I think his usefulness as a character had been exhausted at least by the fifth season. I was hoping that Lex would've killed him off then, or something happened, a la the Spider-Man movie and Lex blamed Clark for his death. I definitely wanted the rift. The seeds had been planted early on and they had been cultivating them almost episode by episode, I definitely wanted to see the payoff of the break between Clark and Lex as both men embraced their destinies.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

They spent half a decade as Bosom buddies.

The weird part was that they became enemies for no reason just suddenly.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

Yes!

So much wasted potential.

I still haven't figured out which relationship was handled worse: this one, or Obi/Anakin.

Certainly, the make up of the relationships was slightly different, but the core concept is the same. Both had the same potential, both made the same mistakes.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

I would have liked to seen Lex become darker sooner as well. Ousted his dad and taken over LuthorCorp rename it LexCorp again (remember he'd already tried once but Lionel screwed him over agani and Lex ended up having to work for Lionel I think this was after Lionel was released from prision) and become more of the Lex we are familar with from the comcis. I got sick of Lex's obession with investigating Clark, even comic book Lex gave up on that, in fact he discovered the secret and couldn't belive it because he thought it was so ridiculous. Also didn't mind Lana getting in between them...although that wasn't really the cause of their dissoultion, the investigation I think had a bigger part of the mistrust both of them had in one another. Lana was just the icing on the cake. I hated how Lex killed his dead. In my version of Superman Lex poisons Lionel...a little cliched maybe but Lex doesn't get his hands dirty as he has someone else do it. Lionel was killed OUT OF NO WHERE in Smallville.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

The whole series should have been handled better.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

Voting... I was expecting voting... well... I vote:

YES! :guffaw:

and they expect us to accept a broken up half corpse as Lex. how unrewarding.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

Well yes, a great big resounding Yes. But the sad thing is every now and again an episode would come along and perfectly handle the relationship, but for the most part Yikes.

I actually think they did a pretty decent job with them. Given it's Superhero show it's hard to focus really closely to stuff liek that as compared to a show like say.. brothers and sisters or whatever drama you might refer to. For the type of show it is I think they did an excellent job.

Do you think more time should have been spent on them being friends before the rift between them occurred?
Nope.. I think the progression went along quite nicely actually... watching Lex's slow decent was quite enjoyable to watch.

Do you think the rift should have happened at all?
Yes. It is important to show the conflict Lex had both with Clark and Johnathon Kent. As many people know here I think Clark and Johnathon are quite the hypocrites but the conflict makes sense in where we all know they ultimately end up.

Or do the audience would have satisfied with the impending rift left hanging by the end of the series but with seeds of it already sown and cracks beginning to emerge in the friendship giving us a sense of foreboding over the two of them?
No, I think they got it right given that Rosenbaum was leaving the show... it makes sense to just tear it apart. I do think though that Lex should be a part of the series ending arc that finally pushes Clark to put on the costume and 100% fully embrace his destiny.

Do you think Lana should have an issue that played a role in the friends' estrangement?
Yes, some of my absolute favorite stuff was some of the oh so dead on moments where Lex would just stab Clark in the heart with biting comments about how Clark treated Lana. Personally I think they should have kept Lana and Lex together longer though I still liked it all.

This is for all of you Smallville viewers, bitter or otherwise.

Thanks.. good discussion material to be sure. :techman:

Very good post but as soon as Lionel berated Lex that he didn't have the guts to pull off a real murder after he accidently killed the doctor on his and Lana's wedding day it was a foregone conclusion that Lex would murder him. :>))

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

I just finished season 8 of Smallville. I know that it barely pertains to this topic since Lex makes one appearance in the whole season but...

His background with the character of Tess Mercer typifies his relationship with Clark or with Lana or with anybody really...

Lex Luthor was never Clark's friend. Was not in fact truly capable of friendship. Was not even capable of relationships. He was all about power and control. Had been from the start though he got worse as the seasons rolled on by.

Friendship is about love and trust. Lex didn't love. He obsessed. He didn't trust anything he couldn't control personally. Clark was a mystery to be solved. Power to be harnessed. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Wrong. Lex many times selflessly put himself in harm's way to protect both Clark and Lana.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

Most of the time he selflessly put himself in harms way, it seemed like he was just over compensating when proving that he is too a good person and everyone, especially Jonathan and Lionel were wrong about him.

but yes, he had many moments where he done well by everyone.

Re: Clark and Lex's friendship should have been handled better: Yes or

^
But in every one of those instances he ultimately had an ulterior motive; that's hardly what I'd call "selfless."

Lex treated Clark, Lana, Chloe, et all as pawns. He may have moved them into safe places on the board, but he had a perfectly good reason for putting them there to advance his game.
