Civilization IV

Yeah, sheer numbers can overwhelm technology. Especially since the difference between cavalry and modern units isn't all that great until you get to mechanized infantry. What ended up happening with that war?

I probably could have won if I'd turned my economy entirely to the task. But I wanted the spaceship victory, so I just loaded a few turns earlier and decided not to declare war on the Zulus. It was tempting to try again after building up my forces for a few turns, especially once I got Modern Armor, but by then one of the other civs had made a defensive pact with the Zulus (probably noticed my buildup on his border!) and I didn't want to deal with that. I did throw a massive amount of culture at one city on my western border, though----got a kick out of enveloping rival cities in my culture. A couple of them eventually revolted and joined me, but never until their population had dwindled. Any way to encourage that happening sooner?

Anyway, spaceship victory achieved in 1976. Rank: Charlemagne. Not bad for my second play all the way to the end.

I fired up a game of Civilization a few days ago, and it came to an end today. One of the more interesting games I've ever played. One of my few wins on Emperor.

I played as the Romans, and quickly took out the Celtics and Vikings to take over my continent. All but two of the religions had been founded on my continent, so I had a lot of Holy Cities to finance my empire. From there on out I played relatively peacefully, and was able to build up a big tech lead since the empires on the other continent were constantly at war with each other.

One side eventually won, and started coming for me as I started my spaceship. I hadn't built up a huge army, but I had plenty of nukes. So I'd constantly nuke his invasion forces before they could get very far. It went back and forth like this for awhile. The French didn't have nukes, so I definitely had the upper hand for awhile. But the earth was rapidly turning into desert due to the nukes I was using, so my productivity was really dropping off.

I was able to get my spaceship launched, and the French made one last ditch push to try to gain enough of the planet's population to vote themselves a Diplomatic victory. So I had use every nuke I had to cut down on his population to prevent the French from winning. Problem was, the French finally got nukes too, and my coastal cities paid dearly for it.

I won a Spaceship victory, and it's a good thing those colonists got away, because the Earth was little more than a half irradiated, burning hulk but the time the game was over.

How many nukes have to go off before you get the instant loss from having trashed the planet?

So I heard (Johnny Cash's version of) "Rock Island Line" for the first time recently. Finally that bizarre Leonard Nimoy quote about pig iron makes sense.

I just played first first complete game of Beyond the Sword as the Ottomans. Cultural Victory---wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I knew I'd get it by 1900 (unless Charlemagne managed to pull off a diplomatic victory first----damn close thing, as it turned out). So I spent the last hundred years figuring out how to fight with modern units (yay air power), something I'd never done before, and eliminated a rival civ that everyone hated anyway (no ill will for doing so).

But something really odd happened this game. The Zulu civilization managed to get itself wiped out by barbarians almost immediately, and they were alone on their own mid-size continent, so nobody else noticed either. So during the replay, I see a bunch of barbarian cities springing up on that continent, until the whole thing is pretty much black.

But that's not the really odd thing. In the late game, say 1500 or so, a bunch of those cities changed color all at once, and the status bar indicated a new civilization had emerged. What the heck? Can barbarians transform into a genuine civ if left alone long enough or something? This new civ never really amounted to much, but it was still really strange.

I believe they can, but I forget the mechanics of it. Play on a Terra map and see if they end up with a civilization.
