I fired up a game of Civilization a few days ago, and it came to an end today. One of the more interesting games I've ever played. One of my few wins on Emperor.
I played as the Romans, and quickly took out the Celtics and Vikings to take over my continent. All but two of the religions had been founded on my continent, so I had a lot of Holy Cities to finance my empire. From there on out I played relatively peacefully, and was able to build up a big tech lead since the empires on the other continent were constantly at war with each other.
One side eventually won, and started coming for me as I started my spaceship. I hadn't built up a huge army, but I had plenty of nukes. So I'd constantly nuke his invasion forces before they could get very far. It went back and forth like this for awhile. The French didn't have nukes, so I definitely had the upper hand for awhile. But the earth was rapidly turning into desert due to the nukes I was using, so my productivity was really dropping off.
I was able to get my spaceship launched, and the French made one last ditch push to try to gain enough of the planet's population to vote themselves a Diplomatic victory. So I had use every nuke I had to cut down on his population to prevent the French from winning. Problem was, the French finally got nukes too, and my coastal cities paid dearly for it.
I won a Spaceship victory, and it's a good thing those colonists got away, because the Earth was little more than a half irradiated, burning hulk but the time the game was over.
