Civilian Life

I think they've purposely stayed away from civilian life for the most part because no one knows what life will be like in the future. They used to try to keep military life more vague as well. The few glimpses we've seen have mostly been of "antique" living, following ancient traditions.

If they do ever show more of contemporary 23rd or 24th century life, I think they'd do well to try to come up with lifestyles as exotic as the modes of transportation and weaponry they did for the military world.

IMO, they dropped the ball toward the end of tv Trek's run with real world futuristic things like DS9's retro-ban on genetic engineering, previously seen in TNG's "Unnatural Selection" - it's definitely going to be commonplace in the future, and they should have found a way to incorporate it into established Trek. That's one of the things about Star Trek that will give it a shorter lifespan in the long-run and have already diminished its brilliance.
