Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been lucky

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

I doubt if I knew who Dan Larroquette was at the time; I barely know who he is now.

Should have said John Larroquette, btw.

Multiple-emmy winning actor known for such shows as Night Court (where he played "Dan Fielding" and why I misspoke and called him "Dan"), the Practice and Boston Legal. I recognized him as soon as I heard his voice.
I imagine Night Court was his only claim to fame at the time, and I've never seen it. I've never seen The Practice or Boston Legal, either.

And I don't know what the objections were to CL's Kruge-- he was like a Klingon Fu Manchu.
A horrible Klingon racist sterotype? ;)
Fu Manchu was never a racist stereotype, but the Klingons stereotype themselves; they like it. :rommie:

But, seriously, his performance did not work for me one bit. I kept hearing Jim Ignatowski threatening Kirk. And, while tastes obviously vary, it appears I am not the only one.
Yeah, I've heard that before. Tastes do indeed vary, because I thought he played ruthless very well-- and with a style that contrasted nicely with Khan's "civilized" ruthlessness in the previous film.

Fair enough. I was simply explaining for anyone who didn't know who he was. (He was also the narrator of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, btw)

I was a big Night Court fan at the time so I recognized his voice immediately. I also knew him from Stripes.

I agree with you. They did a great makeup job to make him nearly indistinguishable, but at the same time, it's likely the iconic voice that make it not work as well for me. I mean, it's great that they got Christopher Lloyd, but this just proves that even all great actors aren't meant for everything. Some things just don't work as some actors will stand out more, and this is one of them.

Exactly. Lloyd is usually brilliant but even the best actors sometimes get a role that doesn't work for them. This one happened to be his.

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

^^ I'd be happy to see them both in a new BTTF movie, perhaps as mentors to their own children. They could just make MJF's illness part of older Marty's character.

.

Fu Manchu was never a racist stereotype,
Isn't the character a classic example of the "Yellow Peril" stereotypes?
More like the prototype. He was an evil genius, like Doctor Doom or whoever, who happened to be Chinese, but there was nothing particularly racist about him. There were, however, a zillion imitations and most of them probably were.

Fair enough. I was simply explaining for anyone who didn't know who he was. (He was also the narrator of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, btw)
That's interesting. I never knew that.

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

Well, Christopher Lloyd did reprise his role for the Telltale game, and I think that's about as close as we'll get to a new BTTF movie. The guy that did the voice of Marty was very good as well.

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

I didn't even know it was John Larroquette until the credits rolled.

I knew it was him the second that he spoke. Like Lloyd, Larroquette has a very distinct voice.

To the G-man, if they really were shooting for Trek vs NBC Thursdays, they really needed to have Markie Post as an Orion slave girl.

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

Sometimes I feel blessed that I have trouble recognizing actors in other roles like Brown and John Larroquet. Especially when they're in makeup like that. Hell, back in the day I didn't realize Michael Dorn was black until several years into TNG.

He's black?! [/Blinkin']

He's not a real Klingon?

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

I thought he worked for the California Highway Patrol?

And that's another thing: I loved CHiPs as a kid, so that's another case of me not recognizing an actor from one show to another.

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

I don't think he's really milking it for money, so much as he simply loves playing Doc Brown.
:) That's pretty much what I think as well. I remember reading an interview about that some time back where he said that he really enjoyed playing Doc Brown.

Are you friggin' kidding? Christopher Lloyd was PERFECT as Kruge. Watch as well as listen to his scenes.

"I have come a long way for the secret of Genesis. And what do I find? A weakling human. A Vulcan boy. And a woman."

He delivers it with such scorn!

And who can forget:

"Maltz! What does that yellow light mean?"

"Slow down, my Lord Kruge."

"Okay. Whhaaaat doooooes thaaaaat yellllll looooow liiiiiight meeeeeean?"

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

^^ One of the funniest scenes ever. Along with Rev Jim saying, "So long, I gotta be going," and just sitting down on the bench and spacing out. :rommie:

I had no idea he was on Chips. :rommie:

Nor Baa Baa Black Sheep / Black Sheep Squadron, which was the first place I saw Larroquette (eight years prior to Night Court's first episode.)

Re: Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been l

Oh, yeah, the Robert Conrad show. I remember when it was on the air, but I never watched it.
