Christians - Does This Upset You?

. . . Funny how Christians do seem an easier target for satirists/comedians than certain other religions...
That's because there are members of certain other religions you definitely don't want to piss off!

As for the "devil buns" and the Jesus references, I find the whole concept delightfully cheeky and irreverent (but then, I'm not a Christian). I mean, the business is called Hell Pizza. What did people expect?

Since when? Did you miss the whole Southpark-Muhammed debacle???

One of these days we'll all be too busy to have the energy to be offended by stupid shit like this. You know what offended me today? The fact that gas is $3.89 a gallon again and nobody's talking about it because they did it gradually so that we wouldn't notice as easily.

Well, I'm not offended. I also think they're joke is one helluva stretch. And I'm studying to be a pastor. So there.

147.9cents/litre here yesterday for regular unleaded.

It's $4.01 a gallon for regular here in L.A., and going up.

It doesn't offend me one bit. When I was devout it wouldn't have offended me. It's just an advertisement for hot devil buns. Don't give the place your business if you don't like it. Hell, there's a Creation Museum 30 miles from where I live, and I see their ads on TV and on billboards all the time, and they are truly stupid ads, ones that cater to the intellectually incurious and ignorant, but I'm not trying to take them down. I just don't give them any business.

Nobody in this thread said anything about trying to stop the advertising, just a few of us said that it was offensive. People absolutely have the right to be offensive. In fact, if somebody tried to force the pizza people to stop this ad campaign, I would defend the pizza people, even though they offend me.

Some people have no sense of humor. Luckily, others do. In any case, religion shouldn't have any special protections, so there's no reason for the ads to be discontinued.

The article talks about the ad being removed, which is why I mentioned it:

Linked Article said:
Chief executive Hilary Souter says as soon as a complaint is made it is passed on to the board, which decides whether action needs to be taken.
The advertising agency or the company in question is then asked for comment in relation to the complaint which is then taken back to the nine board members, who decide whether it should be upheld.
If it is decided that the advertisement is offensive, it is removed.
Mrs Souter says the process takes about 25 days.

It doesn't upset me at all. I wouldn't eat them, as I would have hot cross buns, and not these devil buns, or anything else from Hell Pizza, if they were here.

I'm still wondering who thought "Hell Pizza" was a good name.

I mean--what's their slogan? "Hell Pizza: Desperate to Stand Out"?

Probably the same guy who started a video store in our neighborhood a few years back. The store was called "Extreme Video". He also had a repair shop, called "Extreme Auto Repair" and "Extreme Auto Sales". He wanted to start a convenience store and call it "The Extreme Convenience Shop", I kid you not. Moral of the story? Some people just really suck with names.

as to concept, although non-religious I can see how Christians might find it offensive. The combination of satanic symbol and "limited time" tagline just feels wrong - as well as pretty lame. Funny how Christians do seem an easier target for satirists/comedians than certain other religions...

That would be because you're not likely to get violence as a result. Plus, the way political correctness is currently defined, it is an "acceptable" prejudice. :(

But anyway...as far as the company that did this, I don't like the ad. I would not buy that product or anything else from them.

I wish that Hell Pizza was in America. If there are any near the border in Canada I might go there just to partake.

That's actually pretty cool. Historically, the more cavalierly and frivolously a business invokes Jesus Christ, the more likely I am to give them my money. :techman:

A pizza company has upset people over an advertising campaign that compares its limited-edition hot cross buns to Jesus.
Hell Pizza has put billboards around Auckland's CBD that advertise its hot cross buns with the tagline: "For a limited time. A bit like Jesus."
Rest of story here

I not sure if this is a good marketing plan or not. They are probably going to be boycotted by some people but maybe those people wouldn't be the type to be a Hell Pizza customer in the first place.

However Hell Pizza is getting free publicity because of the controversy.
The only things that offend me is how idiotic the ad is and that someone got paid for pitching it.

I believe that by law, New Zealand is a Christian nation.

Yep. Artists must apologize for DARING to draw up a picture of Mohammed!

But...it's perfectly all right to, say, display a crucified Christ in a jar of URINE! And Christians shouldn't complain, lest they get reactions like:

Some people have no sense of humor. Luckily, others do.

Now...as for this "Hell's Pizza" thing--look. They're clearly just doing this for publicity. It's not exactly on the level as the afforementioned Piss Christ, or a Virgin Mary smeared with elephant dung (onto which are attached various photos of female anatomy)....

Am I bitterly amused at the nerve of those pinheads? Absolutely. Do I blow my stack at it?

Not really. There are worse things....

True. There are MUCH worse things than not liking an ad or disliking artistic interpretation.
