Christians - Does This Upset You?

A pizza company has upset people over an advertising campaign that compares its limited-edition hot cross buns to Jesus.
Hell Pizza has put billboards around Auckland's CBD that advertise its hot cross buns with the tagline: "For a limited time. A bit like Jesus."
Rest of story here

I not sure if this is a good marketing plan or not. They are probably going to be boycotted by some people but maybe those people wouldn't be the type to be a Hell Pizza customer in the first place.

However Hell Pizza is getting free publicity because of the controversy.

"Hell Pizza"?

It's definitely offensive but by this point I'm used to sacrilegious advertising and statements in general.

So "Cross buns" is the Jesus connection? That's a bit thin.

Looks more like a pentagram or the star of David to me.

Hot cross buns are a traditional Easter food at least in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. I am not sure if you have them in the USA.

But I sort of wondered why a pentagram rather than the traditional cross. Maybe because it is Hell Pizza?

I think that's the point. It maybe doesn't happen in the US but in the UK there's a tradition of having hot cross buns at Easter which feature the normal + cross on them.

These buns are hot cross buns from Hell, so they're only a little like Jesus and have a pentagram on them instead of a cross.

It doesn't offend me one bit. When I was devout it wouldn't have offended me. It's just an advertisement for hot devil buns. Don't give the place your business if you don't like it. Hell, there's a Creation Museum 30 miles from where I live, and I see their ads on TV and on billboards all the time, and they are truly stupid ads, ones that cater to the intellectually incurious and ignorant, but I'm not trying to take them down. I just don't give them any business.

I personally find it funny, but if someone tried to run an ad like that in Texas, there would be a riot. I can almost hear the shotguns clicking...

Doesn't offend me at all. Stupid advertising campaign, for sure...but not offensive.

Although as an American, the whole Easter connection was lost on me until you guys mentioned it.

On the billboard in question it says "2 free Hell Cross Buns with orders over $40"; I think that's why the pentagram (inverted in the billboard picture) instead of the traditional cross.

All this thread has done for me is give me a longing for hot cross buns.

I don't find that sort of thing offensive anyway.

Ahhh, I see. I wasn't able to read those words in the photo because they were too small.

Yet more proof of differences with our American brethren  I've spent Easter in US and never noticed lack of hot cross buns. But consider them ghastly things anyway...

as to concept, although non-religious I can see how Christians might find it offensive. The combination of satanic symbol and "limited time" tagline just feels wrong - as well as pretty lame. Funny how Christians do seem an easier target for satirists/comedians than certain other religions...

Then again, it's got people talking so probably achieved its goal...

That's because there are members of certain other religions you definitely don't want to piss off!

As for the "devil buns" and the Jesus references, I find the whole concept delightfully cheeky and irreverent (but then, I'm not a Christian). I mean, the business is called Hell Pizza. What did people expect?

I think I agree with Saquist and Vulcan Princess. I find this offensive, but there are enough offensive things around that I wouldn't actually get upset about this.
