Chivalry: It's dead, Jim.

Well, your first mistake was caring what people said. There's no reason to take those sorts of things as personally as you seem to. Just shrug them off and move on. That's what everyone else does. If they bother you because you think there may be some truth to them, then that would be a cue to make some changes; if not, there's no reason you should care.

And I'm the humourless one ?

I think I have this. The world and it's dog is after Hermiod. Everyone and everything hates him, including the transport system, and women especially. We had a topic about chivalry, now it's about Hermiod.

Yep, sums it up. You missed the part where it wasn't me that said it and where many of the comments I linked to weren't directed at me, but we'll let that slide.

I just think it's funny that the main argument for giving up a seat to a woman is that it's disrespectful, rude or discourteous not to, but the people supporting that argument have been disrespectful, rude and discourteous in making it.

So, you now admit "many" of those comments were not directed at you. Yet you have adopted all of them in your signature as though they were:

"Just in case you are wondering, I am apparently the following: Classless, Ignorant, Hateful, Disrespectful, A Loser, Dateless, Lazy, Mean, Mysoginistic, Humourless. Can we move on ?"

You did read the exchange between sidious and I, right ?

Okay Hermiod now you are like Arsene Wenger whining about Bolton. :D

Geez, catch up, Bolton is so 2006. It's all about Hull now. :p

Good lord, could you guys be any more dramatic? Going so far as to whine about being called names (some of which were never actually said) in ever post you make her via your signature? Really? Wow...I must have really struck a nerve. (With the things I really *did* say, not the words that were put in my mouth i.e "dateless" "loser")

I wonder if some of the comments made in this thread struck a little to close to home, made some people take a look inside themselves and when they didn't like what they saw they then turned it around on those pointing things out.

Since a lot of what I've said here has been twisted and taken to the extremes a number of time, I'll try to restate my position as clearly as I can. If you are a guy on a full train, in a seat and a woman is standing, nobody is forcing you to offer her the seat. You're not a bad person if you don't. You simply aren't a gentleman. If you believe that you're entitled to that seat, then go ahead and keep sitting. However, its simply a sign of a man with extra courtesy and class to at last offer the seat to a woman...especially if you haven't taken the seat yet yourself as in my original post.

You've got it the wrong way around. You made your point, some of us disagreed with you and when you and the people on your side couldn't come up with an argument better than "'cos Daddy told us too" you went personal. The straw man arguments started flowing.

I put the comments in my signature as a joke. That's blatantly obvious if you read the exchange between sidious - who you insulted very early on if you meant to or not - and myself.

I stand corrected. You are a perfect gentleman. Happy now?

Oh yeah, you're right, I forgot to add unhappy to the list.

Am I the only one who found that laugh-out-loud funny? I for one will not be calling you humorless! ;)

This is the crux of the matter right here. Stuff like this applies to women as well as men. For example, If I'm out in public and a gentleman offers me his seat and I turn and yell at him for assuming I'm incompetent then I will not be seen as a classy lady. That doesn't mean I'm a bad person - just a woman without manners.

Now one can argue that the act of offering a seat to a woman is "demeaning" however when someone is acting with the best intentions towards you is not the time to take up that banner. Imho, that would be rude.

"Why can't we all just... get along?" :sigh:

Nice signature, Hermiod, but I feel obliged to tell you that you've misspelled "misogynistic". I usually try not to be a spelling Nazi, but we misogynists who don't give up our seats for ladies have to look out for each other, you know. ;)

It's interesting to note that in his OP, Flux doesn't mention that HE gave up his seat either.

He did text about it, though.

Why? No one else has taken responsibility for what they said.

I always take responsibility for everything I say.

Exactly. I do it because I put myself in someone else's shoes (or heels), and realize that I would be uncomfortable in that situation, so I offer them my seat. It's usually women because the women I have seen when I ride public transportation of any kind have always seemed uncomfortable (and most wearing high heels), some with grocery bags, and others with babies. So I want to make them feel better.

My family told me I should have become a Doctor. I'm a natural healer. :D
Me, I just wanted to become the Love Doctor.
