Chivalry: It's dead, Jim.

And you're perfectly welcome to afford them no special treatment. Those of us who do wish to do so are not wrong to do so, however.

I'm welcome ? The whole premise of this thread is not giving up your seat makes you "a dick" remember ?

My interpretation of the complaint in the first post is that when two people entered at the same time to find a single seat, the male grabbed it knowing that he was depriving the female of it.

That's a bit more egregious than simply refusing to give up a seat you've been in for a while.

Pfft, you only stand up for women and the infirm? I stand for women, men, puppies, and used newspapers. I am a beacon of Chivalry, and you are a poor man for not being as chivalrous as I!

(I also think used newspapers should get the vote.)

The point is the same though. Your train ticket entitles you to carriage, not comfort. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis.

To the OP, I think able bodied women are perfectly as capable of standing as men. If either person had been eldlerly or handicapped, yeah, the other should've yielded the seat. In this day and age, there is no preferential treatment for a gender in every day interactions. If you're dating a woman, sure, treat her extra nice.

But, with your attitude (which I know you mean with the best of intentions) you're basically suggesting that women are not capable of standing, that they're handicaped in some manner and need extra help by virtue of their gender.

Mr Awe

I must be very old fashioned, because I even bow slightly when I offer my seat to someone.

I don't think he's saying that at all, Mr. Awe. I certainly think women are capable of standing and yet I'd offer up my seat for a woman. Doing something nice for the opposite sex doesn't mean they're less capable or important. It really doesn't.

An officer and a gentleman.

The only time I accepted a seat proffered to me on a bus (I usally thank the person and decline) was when I was heavily pregnant and big as a whale.

And as kimc and An Officer suggested earlier on, if the only reason for doing it is because it's a "sexy" gesture, then what difference does it make if us less attractive people give up our seats ?

You did get my point about attractiveness being more than just physical appearance, didn't you?

Physical appearance is the thin end of the wedge. With no established relationship, it's necessary to open the door just a crack.

I for one like a whole lot of guys a lot more courtesy of this topic... while others, as Lindley so articulately describes it, definitely have a bizarre and very warped logic. Jesus.

This is getting tiresome now. There's nothing "bizarre" or "warped" about anyone just because they don't agree with you.

The reasons for not giving up your seat to someone just because they're a woman have been made perfectly clear and there's nothing warped about them. Just shouting "YOUR IDEAS ARE BIZARRE!" doesn't make it so.

This got tiresome 5 pages ago. Didn't stop anyone then.

Certainly not you. All you and those who agree with you seem to be doing is telling those that do not that there is something wrong with them. There is not. It's hollier than thou crap.

We have given good reasons for our views and all we've gotten back are arbitrary traditions and condescending comments.
