All it will take is a few American politicians getting embarrassed, and for the military to get a little more paranoid about the Chinese and Russians in space, and the American space program will be off to the races again with a fresh injection of political and financial capital.

The US Air Force certainly hasn't slowed down its own space program, they're orbiting reusable, unmanned craft more advanced than anything the Chinese or Russians have.

It may not be the patriotic thing to say, but I'm at the point where I don't care who gets into space as long as we get there.

Paranoia for China and Russia would require them actually being a real threat to us at some point, and neither of them are, and are unlikely to be in the foreseeable future.

It may not be the patriotic thing to say, but I'm at the point where I don't care who gets into space as long as we get there.

What's unpatriotic about that? "We need to be awesome" is basically the essence of patriotism. "We need to be more awesome than everyone else" is... well, mainly jingoism.
