Chekov's fate

Uh . . . recast the role for the Kelvinverse.
Agreed since Anton himself was already a recast.

The tributes should be for the actor, not the character they played. After all how many Supermans have there been? Batmans? James Bonds?

Transfer to another ship is best. It's one thing to recast when an actor quits in a hissy and was a pain to begin with, or recast when a movie spawns a TV show, but in this case I think recasting would be wrong. Bring in Arex as the new navigator
As much as I love Mr. Arex, the world needs more Darwin.

I hope they just say that he has transferred to the Reliant or some other ship and as in TAS should be replaced by his own navigation instructor from Starfleet Academy, Lt. Arex. However, my fear is that they will somehow digitally recreate Anton's Chekov.

Have a line early on in the next movie establishing that Chekov's been reassigned to the Reliant.
I agree, although maybe more than just one line. Anything more complicated than this would be pure vanity on behalf of the scriptwriter.

I've seen TAS, there was no mention of this that I can recall.
According to StarTrek.com, Arex was Chekov's navigation instructor at Starfleet Academy. This information comes from a 1973 newsletter by Gene Riddenberry and D.C. Fontana, which described the Animated Series in general, and gave a detailed bio of Arex.

Yeah, just have a mention of Chekov being eventually transferred out of the Enterprise. Like he got a promotion to the Reliant or any position that fits him. If anything, Chekov in general did earn it.

Either just mention, that he got a promotion and was transferred to another ship or kill him off screen and start the movie with a commemoration ceremony. I wouldn't replace Yelchin with another actor and they already said, they wouldn't do it either way.

Personally I think there is also no need for it. He is not Kirk or Spock, one of the two leads. He is also not someone, who you really don't want to lose for diversity reasons like Uhura. With Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Kirk's daddy, the white guy quota is like usual in big Hollywood movies not in danger of being underrepresented.

I think killing him off would be the better course of action. A reminder that this is not the Prime Timeline, though other elements of it still exist.

I'd probably wouldn't see that as such to be honest. The Kelvin timeline went out of its way with the first two films to establish this was not the timeline we're used to already. While Prime Pike's fate is bittersweet (he was crippled saving lives and spent the remainder of his life with the Talosians), Kelvin Pike's was downright depressing (helplessly gunned down while Spock can do nothing to save him). You can't go any further than that.

Not to mention Into Darkness felt like it marked the end of the somewhat cynical atmosphere since the Kelvin incident (not helped by Vulcan's destruction) and the return of the ideals and exploration Starfleet is known for. True, the dangers are there, but its handled in a less self destructive way of solving the problem with teamwork than adding bigger guns.

Having Chekov die off-screen...Would feel like a kick to the junk in my honesty after the progress Beyond made to get away from that mindset.

My opinion.

I'd like to see them try to put together some cut scene or recycled footage of him, presented "on screen" to the assembled crew.

Open the movie with a Captains log...
"Before the Enterprise departs for X, the crew and I have some personal business to attend to..."
Cut to the bridge screen with some re-purposed footage of Yelchin on it, cut back to the crew.
"The bridge will feel a little emptier without you, Lt. Checkov. Reliant's getting a fine officer"
Cut back to a smiling Checkov, lingering a second, then the screen goes to a shuttle departing.
Then Sulu says.... "So, this is goodbye.."
Kirk responds "I think it's about time we got underway ourselves.."
echoing Koenig and Shatner from TUC

Resume movie.
A little fanwanky, but I like it

I know some would hate it. I love it...It could easily be done, and I think the family would appreciate it

I would venture to say most people would hate it, because the self referential aspects of the movies is one of the more consistent gripes. Im one of the minority that likes it.

I do feel uneasy about the idea of anything in the movie being for the family. Who here knows what his family would like if anything? If any sort of mention were to be made it would not be for them it would be for the continuity of the movies and for fans of his character.
