Changes In The Timeline - Abrams' Legacy

As we all know, come May 2009 Star Trek will be destroyed for ever. J.J. Abrams and his creative team are sending a rogue Romulan back in time to alter the past. Trek's forty year history will be eradicated starting it afresh...

The more I think about this the more angry I get. At the films first showing those Star Trek DVD's I have will vanish from my room as the timeline is altered leaving me with no memory of Trek. The novels, the video games even this website will simply never have existed. And you know what makes me more angry than Abram's drastic plan of action? Our feeble stance of INACTION.

We're whining about losing our beloved show to the abyss of oblivion, but what about the rest of the world. Does J.J. Abrams actually understand the ramifications of his bold actions? What of the consequences on society? What would the last forty years have been like if Star Trek never existed like it's going to in May, but we won't be aware of it ever existing, so we won't know any different? Hang on a sec...

Anyway.... Most importantly though, what are we going to do about it? We have 7 months, people. Let's stop this... Before... Before it's too late...

And what annoys me about that is wasting precious screentime on an in-universe explanation for changing continuity rather than simply starting Star Trek anew. Inefficient and illogical, and done simply to appease anal fanboys who are going to hate the whole idea anyway.

Uh, you might want to read his entire post before you just cut and paste one segment of it that is to your liking. At first I thought he was being serious in his rant, but if you read the whole thing it's obvious he's being facetious.

In all fairness, Dukhat, it is getting to the point where it is hard to tell the ridiculously funny, facetious posts from the Haters Club rants.

The good news is that it won't bother you after May.

As we all know, come September 2001 Star Trek will be destroyed for ever. R.K. Berman and his creative team are projecting a rogue enemy back in time to alter the past. Trek's thirty-five year history will be eradicated starting it afresh...

Uh, yeah, I got that. And I was explaining why the angst of the fans that he's parodying is going to lead to some bad storytelling. Maybe you should reign in your editorial comments on other people's posts and stick to the topic at hand.

You mean his later edit comment where he says, "I am an idiot"? ;)

Filmation's TAS already changed the timeline. Spock mentions that his pet sehlat died earlier than he was supposed to, but he assumes the death of a pet was not too much of a divergence.

The reversal of humpback whale extinction (ST IV), and tribble extinction (DS9) are probably more far-reaching. Not to mention the Xindi attacks on Earth (ENT).

Meh, so long as it happens after Christmas since I'm giving some Trek items as xmas gifts. :p

I don't care how different this film will look. I still don't believe it's a reboot. As far as I give a crap, it's the same continuity as it always was.

So, if the past is altered from May 2009 forward (and back, I suppose), then this website in this form will cease to exist as well. All of my collectibles will either disappear or turn into something else entirely. What will the website become?? Where else would I go? Why would I go there? Who would I become? Will my wife and children pop out of existance unbenownst to me? Is there some way I could peek in on that type of future without disrupting it? You know, the holidays are coming up. What do you say we give the ol' temporal prime directive a rest, eh?

Talk about changing the future! The TAS tranformed the entire universe to a graphic two-dimensional realm, without shadows, complete with jerky movements. With no explanation! Then next, along come the Star Trek movies and suddenly everything is once again photo-realistic. So when did the universe change again? How are we expected to keep up with all of this temporal, dimensional, sylistic paradigm shifting?

Umm stupid question, but couldn't we send a klingon back in time to kill the time travelling Romulan before he fails at killing ensign kirk who doesn't die because he's saved by a time traveling vulcan? I think that could work. Maybe. Then the whole Trek Xi thing would never have happened.

Of course fans of Trek XI will probably send an Andorian to kill the Klingon who kills the Romulan who's stopped from killing Kirk by a time-travelling Vulcan.

THIS IS WHY WE HAVE A TEMPORAL PRIME DIRECTIVE PEOPLE!!!

Uh----yeah. Oh wait, he's also sending a certain VULCAN back to to FIX IT before the end of the film.

The 0 registry thing being the point where parody became impossible!

I don't know! For all we know we could have been fans of a show called 'Star Trek' instead of our beloved 'Star Adventures'. In an altered timeline Captain Kurt could be called something weird like 'Captain Kirk'. Also think about the first Space Shuttle Orbiter? After fans petitioned for it to be named after the famous 'Star Adventures' ship, the USS Clegnut, it could have been named something weird and absurd like the USS Enterprise.

We must stop Abrams before he interferes with our history!

I'm scared.

Yeah, and it better be Tuvok or I'm fucking walking. Crippling fanboy desire to see the film be damned, I'll be outta there.

Who's to say at the end of the movie they won't change the timeline back...

And if they don't the Trek we know will still exist in a parallel universe.
