News Chadwick Boseman has died of colon cancer

In the Variety article it mentions him having studied directing, it's a shame we'll never get to see him direct a movie.

Seems unlikely since Coogler mentioned in his tribute that he wasn't privy to Boseman's illness and he was writing his script on the assumption nothing was wrong.
Indeed. It's not my place to second-guess Boseman's decisions regarding his privacy, but I hope Coogler doesn't feel slighted or that he misspent time in writing BP2 so far. As for T'Challa the character, I'm quite sure Boseman is irreplaceable. BP2 will have to introduce a new Wakandan monarch... or, just possibly, a democratically elected chief executive?

My opinion, which everyone's free to adopt or ignore as they choose?

The role of T'Challa should not be recast.

The role of the Black Panther is earnable, and inheritable.

Whoever does become the new lead actor for this franchise is going to have some damn big shoes to fill. Having him be a new character becoming the new Black Panther probably would be the best route to go, if for no other reason you can mirror the challenge in the story by having this new Black Panther having to meet the legacy left behind by T'Challa.

Yeah, I'd prefer a new character, and there have been other Black Panthers in the comics, so they'd be sticking to canon if they went that way.

In the comics, Shuri becomes the Black Panther for a time. Not sure the current Shuri actress is right, physically, for the role, but it’s an option.

Yeah, that was my first thought, especially since the character was a huge hit in the movie.
So anybody else watching the movie tonight? I'm going to, I know it's on Disney+, but I want to support them showing it. I'm hoping to watch the special about Boseman too, but I might fall asleep before then.

The sense I get from Coogler's tribute is that he understood and respected Boseman's privacy. I think he only grieves that he wrote those words now knowing that he'll never get to hear Boseman saying them and not that he "wasted" his time writing them.

I watched Civil War and Black Panther back-to-back on Disney+ yesterday. Besides, I don't have a television. :p

This interview he gave last year was very telling.

What a shame. Terrific actor. Too young. So many people, especially in his industry, have it all and throw their lives away. He didn't do that. Just sadly, unfortunate genetics. I hope his family finds some peace and comfort.

Issuing a blanket rule: If anyone is so tasteless as to ask about new actors to play T'Challa, you're eating a permanent ban.

It is rather low to even be concerned about a role in some franchise when the person behind that role has just died.

I think that's fair in this thread given that it is about the actor, not the character. But it's also a fair topic in the future in another thread. But I agree it's not right to talk about it here.

I wonder if he left any "get checked" PSA's for use after he was gone like Yul Brenner did after his death from lung cancer. Could be INCREDIBLY helpful coming from someone like him.

Shuri as queen and M'Baku as Black Panther could work, the Roles of Sovereign and Black Panther can be separate, as seen when T-Challa is already Black Panther before his father died.

I'd say the problem is where to get the Heart Shaped Herb, but I'm sure they came up with a resolution for that before they burned it in the first movie. Though if it's as simple as "secret grove" I'll be disappointed.
