Cetacian Ops?

With a nod to David Brin

A dolphin uniform? How would they put them on or remove them? It'd make more sense just to, say, paint the dorsal fin in department colors and have a comm/translator implant near the blowhole.

Hmm. How would dolphins do much of anything except swim and philosophize? Darwin needs to give those critters opposable thumbs. :p

^^SF about intelligent dolphins has generally given them either cyborg implants or wearable robotic arms with manipulative capacity.

Of course, given future technology, it wouldn't be that hard to develop a purely voice-activated technology base for dolphins to work with. If Picard can say "Tea, Earl Grey, hot," then who needs pushbuttons?

Besides, it contradicts what the TNGTM actually says. On pp. 44-5, it refers to the dolphins as a "consultation crew" that is "overseen" by the two orcas. It goes on:

Why do orcas always gotta be keepin the dolphin down?

I think 'Otten's Forgotten Trek" site has some pics of concept drawings of both the TNG and TMP refit cetacean areas? If anyone is interested?

Hmmm...I'm intrigued. Please. I'd love to see these images.

Then it seems I got here just in time. ;)

This one was produced for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I don't know by whom, nor what the story here is, but apparently *someone* considered putting whales aboard the Refit Enterprise....

This one is by Andrew Probert, sketched for the original Star Trek: Online.

From: "Unseen Enterprise-D interiors"

That is an illustration by Ralph McQuarrie for Phil Kaufman's thankfully DOA Planet of the Titans project. I have no idea what it is supposed to represent.

Some sort of cetacean facility, I suppose... I don't know, but thank you very much indeed for pointing out the artist. Maybe I'll be able to find some more info, knowing that.

Some great stuff in that thread there though. Some of those images I already got on my site, but there are some I'll definitely be adding soon!

You know I've had the feeling for a long time that Dolphin's "like" us out of their fascination of us (not as a whole species -- just the individuals that come across us) -- Individual humans are similarly fascinated by highly intelligent animals as well. I would assume that just as we see so much of ourselves (our intellect, etc) in them, they probably see so much of themselves in us.

The bottom part of the top pic seems to be a scale representation of Stephen Colbert and his testicles.

No no no. That's for STAR TREK IV. MCQuarrie did sketches and renderings for ILM's bid on the film. I mean, seriously, people see a whale in a Trek rendering and they actually can believe it's for TMP? :wtf:
