Centaur Class Question

the centaur is one of the best kitbash ships IMO

Agreed. Love this one. Wish this one made more appearances.

well kitbashes are kitbashes. they are ships made up in a hurry when a background ship of a new type is needed in an episode. stock footage is sometimes re-used. but if im not mistaken most of the kitbashes seen at wolf 359 were never seen again. at the time the makers needed numerous different starships- which they didnt have- so had to be created. the story of the centaur is different. anyone know much about it?

Ex Astris has probably the most extensive write-up about it here:

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/ds9tm.htm#centaur

One of the most surprising aspects about it is that it was originally called the USS Buckner (after the guy who built it), probably before he knew what the dialog called it.

Ongoing arguments ensue about its scale, as it's made using the 1:1000 scale ERTL USS Excelsior for the primary hull and engines, and the 1:537 scale ERTL USS Reliant for the rollbar assembly and bridge. (Scale references here).

The boatload of wacky greebles on the hull also turns a lot of people off, but I think gives it character. Several people have done extensive research on identifying the other smaller parts used to detail the miniature. This is the one that comes most recently to mind:

The schematics that came out about this ship were CG's rendered for the Star Trek Fact Files and not accurate to the original model:

Enjoy!

I like the Centaur, but some of those DS9TM kitbashes just hurt my eyes. If they were designed as elegantly as the Miranda-class, then I wouldn't have a problem with it. The Miranda class is very similar to the Constitution class, but I don't know if I'd call it a kitbash. But at least the components (saucer, nacelles) are the same size I believe, which makes sense. I feel like the Centaur should be to the Excelsior what the Miranda is to the Constitution.

..Of joy?

Apart from the Centaur, that one has always been my favorite. A good solid boxy greebled down-nacelled "Miranda" to match the smooth curvy ungreebled up-nacelled "Constitution" of the original Intrepid class...
