Centaur Class Question

Warp Rider

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I was wondering if it would be believeable to retro-fit the Centaur class with late 24th century tech, (let's say 2390's), in order to allow it to perform deep space missions? :)

The Centaur? I doubt it. I mean, its an Excelsior saucer with nacelles attached via struts. It doesn't exactly scream "deep space" like the Galaxy or Sovereign.*

*Never you mind that the Galaxy classes apparently were never sent deep into space and were little more than oversized couriers half the time

Well you could argue the point since the Enterprise NX-01 had less decks, less crew complement and mainly was a saucer section with warp nacelles attached, yet it still went into deep space.

Guess I should have also mentioned this was to see if I should go with this hardly used class ship for my own ST Story. Cause I rather not go with the obvious ship choices like the Galaxy and Sovereign. ^^'

"Deep space" being a relative term for Earth at that point. The Enterprise wasn't exactly joyriding to Bajor at that point. :) The impression I get in regards to the Centaur is that it was meant as a medium range vessel. But hell, its a fanfic, so just stretch things as needed.

Something like this?

That's not a bad design, though the ship at least for the beginning would still look like the old Centaur on the outside, but the inner workings I was considering retro-fitted. Systesm, weapons, warp drive, etc; but I do intend to overhaul the entire ship later on in the story, though I was thinking of having the wings curved upward with the Nacelles, and still having two torp tubes on either side of the Deflector dish, (one on each side of it). ^_^

And that's pretty close to the refit which I envisioned. Awesome work Sojourner. :)

Given that ships like Excelsiors and Mirandas changed very little cosmetically into the 24th century, I'd consider refitting ships to rarely require changing the actual externals of the ship. For all we know, the Centaur was already as state-of-the-art as she could be without completely rebuilding the ship, and if you have to rebuild the ship completely, why not just build a new one with the same arrangement but different base parts?

(Sorry, I've been overthinking "Star Trek:Online.")

Guess it may depend on how damaged it'll be and if it's worth salvaging, but I guess I could just have them build a new one instead of refitting it.

As a in detail science vessle, probably not. But quick little scout/mapping ship that zipped around, stayed long enough to put a pin in the map, and off to the next system I can see it working.

Indeed, the model's glued-on bits suggest that the Centaur had been upgraded and modified substantially over the years, almost haphazardly. You might say that the Centaur was ALREADY upgrade with late 24th century tech to begin with.

Hell, the Centaur might have been created simply because SF had a bunch of leftover Excelsior saucers and didn't want to scrap them.

Well I gues I could just go make up my own class of ship then, though I haven't sketched one before, at least not in a tech manual way. I just usually doodle the ships quickly in my spare time, having them in a small battle.

Would it be wise to hold an art contest for the ship in the art forum, to pick a design that I'd like to use for it?

And it seems that it's hardly used from what I can see, that's one of the few reasons why I originally wanted to use it for my story. Instead of going on the "bandwagon", by using better known and bigger classes of ships. ^^'

well kitbashes are kitbashes. they are ships made up in a hurry when a background ship of a new type is needed in an episode. stock footage is sometimes re-used. but if im not mistaken most of the kitbashes seen at wolf 359 were never seen again. at the time the makers needed numerous different starships- which they didnt have- so had to be created. the story of the centaur is different. anyone know much about it?

I know what Kitbashes are and I know about stock footage and, I also know that they needed a lot of different vessels during the Wolf359. XD
