CBS should bring back TNG like Fox did w/X-Files

Yes - there was pent-up demand for Han Solo and Star Wars more generally - there is no pent up demand for 'that guy with the beard who sat on chairs in a funny way' or 'the one other time gave up on doing an accent'.
Well TBH, the picture of him wearing a lobster suit in the bathtub is all the evidence that CBS needs to determine that a TNG "special event" would be a HUGE HIT!!

After the tremendous ratings success of the X-Files revival, tptb at CBS would be absolutely foolish to not consider taking a similar approach with TNG.

TNG has as big if not bigger (perhaps much bigger) following than the X-Files. I don't think that TNG could carry a major motion picture at this point, but i do feel equally confident that if the series were to return in a limited run/mini series it would be a huge ratings winner and a nice shot in the arm to Star Trek moving forward...I know it's too late at this point, but what would have been a better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek?

There is a huge and loyal fanbase that would love to see the return of the TNG cast. Quite frankly I think the interest would dwarf that of the upcoming program (that nobody is going to watch as you will have to pay for it) in 2017.

All original cast members have said they would return. Michael Dorn as gone as far as pitching his own series to CBS...With revival tv (X-Files, Gilmore Girls, Full House, Dallas etc..) becoming more and more popular, I think TNG's return in some fashion in a limited run is an absolute no brainer. I think it would be the most successful show of them all.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Please don't mention bringing back Voy, ENT and to lesser extent DS9 as they simply were not popular enough with the general audience to consider bringing back.

Why are they too old?

Harrison Ford is 73 years old. Did I mention that his recent film (you may have heard of it) has made over $2 billion worldwide and is currently at $920 million domestically + counting. Did I mention that it's the all time domestic box office champion? I hardly think people cared how old Han Solo was. It was Han f***ing Solo back on the screen. Nobody, cared what his age was...Sylvester Stallone is going to win an Oscar this Sunday for playing Rocky. If someone had said he was too old that great performance would never have happened.xception of Patrick Stewart, none of the main actors are major (Not to diminish them. They all have solid careers in their own right) stars. They would jump at the chance to return to their roles. Michael Dorn has tried to get his own Worf series on the air for years.

I'd bet my life that someone at CBS after looking at the success of the X-Files is thinking the same thing about TNG.
I'd bet your life they're not. There will be a new series, and while we continue to debate what it will be, I can guarantee that it won't be a continuation of an existing series. What you fail to note in your Harrison Ford and Sylvester Stallone example is that they weren't the main characters. Ford doesn't show up until about 45 minutes in, and is unlikely to be in future movies. All the heavy lifting is done by Poe, Rey, and Finn. New Characters. In Creed, Stallone wasn't the main character. The titular Creed was. So a series that is a straight continuation, ala Phase 2, is never going to happen.

The Classic Series movies pushed the envelope as far as it could possibly go with an elderly cast. Movies which became increasingly broad and flat as the series went on. STAR TREK IV was the very start of this phenomenon. Nichelle Nichols and James Doohan's acting in the movies became increasingly cartoonish and I can't pin any reason on it. I guess they thought it was funny, you know? That they couldn't believe that someone would actually pay them to be in these kinds of films.

Fortunately, I will not get to see that happen with The Next Generation cast. Although, Nemesis was damn near it. The cinematography was designed to enhance and exaggerate how long in the tooth everyone had gotten, even by that point. Worf was really looking flabby for a Klingon and Deanna had enough face paint on to stop a bullet. Riker was bed-headed and beer gutted. It was no wonder he decided to marry in this one, as he could no longer pull like he used to. That is the time to do it and he was smart about that. Nevertheless, it was the last one ... and I thank Providence for it.

I doubt they could bring it back; they would have to work around the schedules of too many cast members for it to be feasible in my opinion.
Even if they did bring it back I would not watch it. "All Good Things..." ended the series perfectly; it gave us closure and finality but also left enough open for each viewer to imagine the characters progressing towards the futures they preferred. For example whether Geordi would really end up with Brahms would be up for the viewer to decide based on their image of the character and their preferences.
Any expansion on this series, like the movies did, is superfluous and may even demean the images of the characters that people have held dear for decades. (looking at you Insurrection...)

I love TNG to death but I don't want it back. I wish the movies had been better and more successful so there would have been more but what's done is done. It's over now. TNG will live on forever in reruns.

I'd love to see the characters/actors guest star in the new series if it's appropriate though. It was exciting when Spock and Scotty were announced to be appearing in TNG.

They killed him off.

So, yeah, that might be a fun thing to do with the TNG characters in the first episode.

Out of curiosity I would be interested in a movie or a mini series based on the USS Titan, with some of the TNG/VOY/DS9 and maybe even ENT cast members willing to return (it could be the same actors playing a different role OR a time travel story involving Titan and NX-01), just to give it a chance and see where it goes. Maybe as a one off re-union/final send off for not just TNG, but the other shows, too, considering the galactic-sized turd TATV turned out to be. I know there is no way in hell this would ever be made, but it is a nice pipe dream.

But I think as far as a strictly TNG film or series revival? I don't know that it would add any more than 7 seasons and 4 movies didn't already add.

Whatever may be said about 24th Century lifespans, Patrick Stewart is too old to be playing a captain. Promote him off the bridge and the miniseries can open with Admiral Picard learning of some new threat

In all fairness, he doesn't look that much older than when he was making the show. He never looked particularly youthful and is still thin and balding !

No reason he shouldn't be an admiral though...

As much as I love TNG - 10 Years ago I would have liked nothing more. But no, better not. And Riker should be with the TITAN far away from earth by now...

What I would like to see is a special edition of All Good Things. Re film the actors for the future timeline and cut it in with the original version. Instead of the elderly makeup of the original version, you would see them actually at that age. It's never going to happen, but it would be a fun special edition sort of thing.

There are some things in life that I want to last forever.... like my marriage, the love of my family, etc.
There are other things that can end, and its just fine. TNG is one of those things. I have had enough.

Yes, I would like to see that. I'm surprised by all the negative comments of them being old. In the future people will have far longer life spans than they do now, although Star Trek doesn't really exploit this possibility well enough, this is the perfect opportunity to show that being in the 50-70 age group is considered to be young in the distant future. Also, the balding comments, seriously? That's like complaining about people's skin color, are you seriously Trekkies?

Yep, we are all ageists.... ORRRRRR .... we recognize that even in the loverly utopia of the 24th century, a crew would not stay together for 30 odd years and would have moved on to other careers and assignments.

I'm sure they would never reunite the entire crew. It's 30 years since TNG started! Most of the actors are probably looking forward to retirement.

And TNG isn't going to be popular enough with today's general audience either. The "huge and loyal fanbase" is only a tiny fraction of a percentage of that general audience.
If the 2017 series is a success, it would be cool if the producers took the opportunity to make some standalone features starring previous characters. After all, this isn't a TV show. They shouldn't be forced to stick to a predictable syndication-style format if they have a good idea for something else. I can imagine Bryan Fuller grinning at the idea of a movie-length ep which sneakily turns into "The Adventures of Captain Worf".

It's not a TV show, but it still needs to generate revenue. How many people will subscribe to CBSAA for "The Adventures of Captain Worf" who wouldn't otherwise subscribe? How many people will keep their subscription because of Worf who were about to cancel otherwise? That's the revenue the show brings in. If that's not more than the cost of producing the show then it won't get made. Regardless of syndication style format considerations.

It's what I hated about TOS films, after The Voyage Home, I felt after the crew was spared from a court martial, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty would return in V but Uhura, Chekhov, and Sulu should've went on to better pastures. While the senior officers would be with a young crew.

.

People pay to watch GAME OF THRONES. People pay to watch DAREDEVIL and JESSICA JONES. People pay to watch HOUSE OF CARDS and ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK and THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. People are going to pay to watch the new GILMORE GIRLS. I paid to watch DEXTER and am sorely tempted by PENNY DREADFUL.

But people aren't going to pay to watch a new STAR TREK show?

Not sure I'd leap to that conclusion . . ..

Heck, people pay for the comic books and novels and merchandise and autographs and conventions, but they won't pay for an actual new STAR TREK tv series?
