CBS should bring back TNG like Fox did w/X-Files

I'd like a proper finish to the TNG cast. A TV mini series that ties up up right and ignores the events of Insurrection ahd Nemesis.

Sadly, that will probably never happen. But why not just ignore Insurrection and Nemesis totally? Just watch AGT and then never watch the TNG films again. ;)

I wouldn't mind an animated TNG mini-series. With the original actors' voices.

Some Producer who could make it happen while reading your post...

"I wouldn't mind an animated TNG mini-series."

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...............

"With the original actors' voices."

HAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!

Even if there was a snowballs chance in hell it would happen it would be recast.

I'd like to see one though.

And nothing anyone says here on TrekBBS has any chance of influencing show-runners and producers anyway.

Pretty much what I do. I think AGT is the best send off for the TNG crew.

DId anyone who is saying the TNG cast looks too old to return actually watch the X-Files miniseries? Mulder looks A LOT older than he did during the 90's and Scully had so much botox that I couldn't tell what emotion she was trying to convey.

A TNG mini-series would obviously be more complicated for a couple of obvious reasons to start with an ageless android (that has an "aging program,") who died in Nemesis and even assuming with a B4 reboot would be tough even with modern technology to make Brent Spiner look younger and thinner would be a tough, tough sell. The other issue is that Patrick Stewart has stayed successful in Hollywood past TNG and would come at a very high cost.

You could easily get Frakes, Sirtis, McFadden, Dorn and let's be honest Wil Wheaton would jump at the chance to do something other than Big Bang episodes. They wouldn't obviously pick up at season seven with the expectation they all crammed back into their TNG uniforms like Troi and Riker did for Enterprise.

And who is to say that the style and message of TNG does not still have an audience? X Files did a monster of the week episode in their mini-series that looked like it came straight out of the early 90's.

So for all the reasons it could not work, there are many reasons it could work. I would like to see the TNG cast come back one more time either in their own mini-series or in the new Trek series as cameos as the TOS cast did in TNG/VOY.

I think there is a lot more faith in TNG as a going concern in this thread thank there every would be in the decision making halls of CBS.

I can't realistically see TNG returning to TV in any form whatsoever. It's a sequel to a show that's since been rebooted. It would be like bringing back Lois and Clark, not going to happen.
Hey, there's a thought. Bring back TNG AND Lois & Clark. If they're gonna bring back one of my favorite versions of Star Trek, might as well bring back my absolute favorite version of Superman.

Yeah, yeah, I know, but I can dream.......

What they should do is a "3 in one" reunion special of sorts utilizing main and recurring characters from TNG , DS9 and Voyager mixed in with younger new characters. I never ever see them doing a reunion/continuation for each series so this may be the best option to please all TNG "era" fans. Plus it would be more practical financially as the setting wouldn't necessarily be specific to any of the series (requiring massive set re-design for the Enterprise, DS9 etc) and may just piggy back from the sets that will made for the new upcoming series. A redress here and there and it just may work. Netflix was willing to pay big $ for the new show and are probably hungry for New Star Trek. I would sell it to them and maybe release it after the 1st season of the new show is done streaming at CBS All Access,. It can be marketed as a one time Netflix exclusive event.

I would like to see TNG brought back again, just as X-files.
But is it possible?

In regular viewing, yes, but you can't fully because these steamers ended the TNG franchise.

Certainly TNG is not coming back. It might be possible to bring back a star or two in a new series, but even that is unlikely, if not impossible.

Mr Awe

Han Solo is an iconic character. Perhaps Spock or Kirk could be compared to his appeal, but I doubt it.

Harrison Ford is a far more popular and "major" actor and even he played what could arguably be considered a subsidiary/advisor role in TFA.

I am glad that Patrick Stewart would return if asked - but I don't see him being asked.

Again, when the studio looks at the returns of the most recent work associated with "TNG" what do they see? Crap. The last time that TNG was a cultural phenomenon was well over 20 years ago.

Also - If i am not mistaken, the TNG Blu-Rays sold so poorly that it convinced TPTB to not make any more. "

Agree or disagree, I have to point out that you could literally use all of the second half of that comment with the words 'x files' in place of Tng and be accurate. And look what happened. And trust me, no show fell further from cultural icon grace that that did by its final season and last movie.

Not exactly.

Most, if not all, of the cast have said that they wouldn't want to come back for another live-action series/film.

It's an interesting comparison that characters and a series can still be popular and gain viewers even though their last film underperformed but it's a lot less likely with TNG as its been much longer off air, there have been different and less popular series rather than just absence and the TNG blu ray sets apparently didn't do well.
It also wouldn't make sense to try to revive with Data dead and Troi and Riker already having moved to their own ship.
It's nonsense to say it's not popular enough. You can't look at things in a vacuum. Yes, the last couple of TNG films flopped, but there were reasons for that. First off they were god awful films.
Let's see about that:

Generations-Okay, not that great

First Contact: amazing, with drama, action, and charactertization balanced wonderfully.

Insurrection; Garbage about space hippies who are too selfish with a life-extending chemical that could help billions.

Nemesis; More garbage, and not very well done.

Two out of four isn't bad.

As was said by others, the oversaturation of the franchise is why things collapsed.

I think as long as there was a damn good story behind it, it would work. One that doesn't ignore the passage of time, and doesn't imagine that they'd all still be flying around together 30 years after their first tour of duty.

I disagree with anyone who says the cast would not come back. They're actors, not royalty, and most of them aren't retired yet. Working actors want to work, as long as the script and the money are good. Maybe they couldn't afford Stewart, but the rest would most likely at least consider it.

But I think what would work better is a new show with a new cast, set a few decades after the Dominion War. TNG-era characters could pop up occasionally. Miles might still be teaching at the academy, Picard could be retired, Riker would be an admiral, Worf could have succeeded Martok as chancellor of the Klingon Empire, etc... They could be recurring characters, but the show should have a new main cast.

And since they're working on something else for All Access, the chances of this happening may be next to zero.

^ Worf as the aged chancellor or emperor of the Klingons would be fun. The visual image I have is of Old King Conan in that great shot at the end of Conan the Barbarian. Worf would be battle-scarred, world-weary, and corrupted by court life, but eventually our new heroes would prompt him to redeem himself.

I'd want to see a human Augment as the king of the Klingon Empire.
