CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

That sounds more likely Jody. Can I ask where you saw that, or supposition? I just can't see CBS and Paramount walking away. it's just not logical ( I swear, no pun intended)

Bawden at Axanar. There's also some chatter from, um, "others."

"Axanar Productions statement on tonight's announcement:

While we're grateful to receive the public support of JJ Abrams and Justin Lin, as the lawsuit remains pending, we want to make sure we go through all the proper steps to make sure all matters are settled with CBS and Paramount. Our goal from the beginning of this legal matter has been to address the concerns of the plaintiffs in a way that still allows us to tell the story of AXANAR and meets the expectations of the over 10,000 fans who financially supported our project.

There is still a lot of work to do, but receiving this kind of public support helps immensely.

Even if they step in and force professionalism on Axanar writing, management, etc. just to prove their point, they will in the end still have to deal with Alec claiming a stake in the franchise. Oh boy are they going to wake up with a migraine. Something else will go south only harder.

If this is all true, and there's going to be a settlement that allows this to get made, there is only one major thing I truly hope is inserted as a requirement in the settlement:

A deadline.

If they don't put some kind of performance requirement in there, then I doubt we'll see Axanar at any point within the next three years. Peters has the perfect excuse: "I got sued!"

I won't even comment on my feelings regarding the results this will have on Alec's ego; that would not be "family friendly".

If true, I'm very curious what these "guidelines" will say...

...Axanar as a series of five minute shorts, anyone?

JJ wasn't around when the first spammers invaded Usenet, and got away with it.

I could get behind JJ, if only he'd said "every fan EXCEPT this one will get to make their film".

I'm willing to bet crowdfunding will no longer be an option. Which could hamper Axanar if it goes forward, since they seem to have spent a good deal of the money they've already raised.
I would be fine with that. It would take fan films back to being what they were originally, and while that would hamper some excellent fan productions somewhat, I think it would make for a tighter, leaner production with greater focus on the areas that work well despite a lack of funding, such as writing.

While I disagree with the outcome, this is a PR strategy that puts Abrams and Lin as saviors of fandom and fan films. Quite frankly this makes them look better than Peters.

Like I said up thread, that's the only shinning beacon in this. The Studio, Abrams and Lin are the heroes that Peters will have to thank. There's a sort of delicious irony in all of this.
