CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Even if they did, that wouldn't make it a Mickey free-for-all. It's worth noting that the pre-1947 Warner Bros. color cartoon catalog fell into the public domain a long time ago, and Bugs Bunny et al are still protected by Trademark. So while you can freely distribute those old now-in-the-P.D. cartoons, you can't make a new Bugs Bunny cartoon.

IDK - Remember these are Star Trek nerds (like us) - so Mr. Peters probably went with a CISCO VOIP Video phone (like model CP-9971). Those run between $199 - $285 a pop (link); and he probably went with the higher end CISCO CP DX 650 at $550 to $1250 a pop (link) - (Remember this is a 'professional' production, so can't skimp on the tools) :beer::guffaw:;)

In the event that you make any modifications, adaptations or derivative works of any kind to the Proprietary Materials (the “Modifications”), whether authorized or unauthorized, you understand and agree that you shall retain no rights of any kind in and to such Modifications and that all rights therein shall belong solely to PWE. You hereby irrevocably assign (and agree to assign) and transfer to PWE, free and clear of any restrictions or encumbrances, without any compensation beyond the consideration provided herein, any and all rights, title and interest that you may have in and to such Modifications. This assignment includes, without limitation, all worldwide copyrights and patent rights in and to such Modifications and the right to sue for past and future infringements. You hereby agree to cooperate with PWE in connection with the protection thereof and shall execute such documents (like further deed of transfer or assignment), if any, as needed by PWE to perfect its rights hereunder.

Yeah. The Foundry tool which is used to create player-generated content is quite strict as well. You can't use anything from the novels without explicit permission. No likenesses either, but you could mention a canon character. (Sorry, you can't do Axanar and the Four Years War.)

I remember a player having to contact Peter David to use elements from New Frontier in a mission.

Didn't "ST II: The Wrath of Khan" already do that? No brownface makeup for Montalban, the blond Joachim replacing brunette Joaquin, and caucasian stripper dancers from the Chippendales as Khan's followers? ;)

Agreed. The interesting part of that article is the part about trademarks. Even if characters like Mickey and Superman enter the public domain, those companies would still own the trademark.

This is one of the things that strikes me as odd about Axanar. It's like Abrams Trek lives in this extreme area of opinion. Hear me out-this ties together.

Peters has often stated that Axanar was a response to Abrams Trek, and moving back to "true Trek" or whatever term you want to use-there are many. In many ways, to me, it was a negative reaction. We don't like it, so we will show our version, the better version. Which means that Abrams Trek will be held up in their discourse about what not to do.

That seems like Abrams Trek immediately becomes a part of the conversation because it is what they don't want to be.

This makes people, like me, who think Abrams Trek is just fine, go "Why all the hate?" Just like Peters is asking right now.

I just wonder, if Axanar was not so bent on showing up CBS and ranting against Abrams Trek if things might have been just a little different. Maybe it's just me, but I think a middle road of opinion would have done well here.

But, that's just me.
 
He's playing to his audience. You can make a film with all the "Abrams" elements, but if you say you hate Abrams folks will eat it up and give you money, He might not even have hated them at first, but eventually came to believe it. Wouldn't be the first time someone fell for their own hype. ;)
 
Funny you should say that because on Alec's Star Trek Props blog, he had pictures of himself at the premiere of the first JJ film in 2009 and Alec was a real fanboy. He said if you don't like it, you're not a Star Trek fan.

Oh no doubt. Heavy handed polarizing controversy gets peoples attention. Peters has done that with his True-Speak®. True Fans, True Trek, True GR vision, just give me your money and all will come to pass. Just pushing peoples buttons with emotionalism, really. His followers swallowed his jive, hook, line and sinker.
