CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Just had a look at that Axanar Indiegogo site. OMG I had no idea the extent of this thing. What are people who donated thousands going to do?! And what does it mean for all the other fan productions who do similar stuff like this (STC, Phase II, Renegades, Pike)??

OMG What a mess

Who will end up cleaning up this mess too ?

Maybe they'll nuke all the fan films from orbit. It is the only way to be sure.

FYI.

Another thing - the Axanar fandom is a drop in the bucket, or at least the known fans are.

Look at objective #s.

Axanar movie FB group - just under 68,000 fans
Axanar fan group on FB - just under 7,800 members
a few smaller Axanar fan groups, for STO or "I stand with Axanar" - 3,150 followers combined
Axanar kickstarter - just under 8,550 backers
Axanar indiegogo - 7,540 backers
--------------
TOTAL: 95,040
Subtract 10% (9,504) for people who are members of more than one group: 85,536

This is less than 1/4 of the # of people who tuned in, on average, every single week, for Enterprise (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:...#Reception ) during its least popular season.
Star Trek Into Darkness earned about $29.9 Million (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_...#Reception ).

Yeah, Axanar fans? You are not as big as you think you are.

CBS/Paramount is lining its ducks up for the future - and also has serious beefs with Axanar using Trek IP to raise funds for a studio and sell merch unrelated to fundraiser fulfillments. Those are profits from the Trek IP. Period.

We're going to talk about this on Sunday at the G & T Show. Should be a fun discussion.

I would say, your Fan Group, Kickstarter donor count, and the Indigogo donor count represent almost 7K of the same people... (and I would be willing to venture those 7k also like the Axanar page) so take 7kX4 (28K) out of that figure...

Hahaha ... from the Axanar Fan Group:

(I deleted my original tweet because I was fussing with the actual image size to be compliant with BBS rules. Apologizes.)

No doubt - just trying to err on the generous side, and they still come out ... small.

They probably should be.

Though I'd imagine them packaging them as rewards for donations might buy them some leniency. The Axanar people are selling coffee straight up. Without even acknowledging the IP owner.

This is true, although I doubt the defense that "they were rewards given to donors, not products sold to customers" would fly in court.

I think part of it is that Renegades have already told CBS that they are done after making this film.

Though I do wonder what happens to funds that are collected beyond what is needed to make the film? Maybe Tom can speak to that?

This thread is moving so fast its hard to keep up!

Anyways, our support us page is the same thing as a Kickstarter or Indiegogo crowdfunding page. You donate, you get the perks at that reward level. CBS is allowing crowdfunding (for now anyways), this is no different. All money donated goes towards out next production, in this case "The Requiem" .

We have been raising money this way for over 3 years (Pilot etc..) and it has need been a problem.

Here is a novel Idea.... *IF* you wanna do something big and bold, and splashy, do an original work, and don't get pissed off if you decide to do derivative work, and someone comes back later and kicks you out of their sandbox.....

Axanar as a story didn't have to be set in Star Trek Universe, or use CBS IP.... it could have all been original.. the problem is creating your own work is hard, and difficult, and Peters wouldn't have gotten the financial support he received, using someone else's IP....

Hence the problem...

But what happens to the money that is beyond what you need or is donated after whatever cut off you have to set your budget? Has CBS given any guidance as far as that is concerned?

Well, yeah. What drew me into Axanar was the look they were going for and more importantly the great cast they had lined up.

I hope not, I like most of the fan films so far, be a shame to loose them due to one small group of folks being petty.

If when the smoke clears from all this & that is what happens, you can bet the blame will end up on the wrong people.

As far as the fandom goes we should lay the blame on the folks who ran Axanar, if this whole thing goes down due to them.

However I can also see a lot of fan productions tossing in the towel before even starting seeing what's going on right now.

#BoycottStarTrek

Yeah, good luck with that.

What's most hilarious about this threat is that many of these fans made a big deal in the comments on that article on The Wrap and elsewhere several months ago that they weren't going to see Star Trek Beyond anyways.

For a boycott to work, it's helpful to have actual leverage!

Just think if Trek was owned by THE MOUSE...

This whole matter would of been gone in no time at all...

Disney lawyers carry lightsabers nowadays after all

;-)

Knowing the Mouses compulsive shopping habit Disney will own the lot in 20 years! ;)
