CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Peters just trying to change the narrative again, he figures he's the smartest man on the interwebs.

I have to admit one thing about Peters: he knows how to fan the flames and distract people.

Like his use of the word "hate", and attributing all "hate" to Mignogna. I mean, really? Perhaps I just don't know who he is here, but I've never noticed him contributing anywhere on this thread.

But the word "hate" is inflammatory, and Peters uses it to his advantage to try to redirect peoples' feelings. To some degree, successfully. It's actually kinda disturbing to watch.

All hate is attributable to Kirk Thatcher.

A thought experiment. For a moment, require that Klingon be called [your least favorite politician]speak. Require that the backstory "cultural" concepts from which the "uniquely expressible only in Klingon" qualities arise which come from Trek IP, be replaced with only concepts from the backstories and sayings of said politician.

You get to keep the dictionary and script and grammar, except of course the Trek-IP originated idioms need to be shifted to the politician's tropes, and at your gatherings you need to dress up like the politician ;).

Is the language still Klingon?

Yes.

Klingon is a pretty fantastically interesting language simply as a linguistic matter; it's grammar and vocabulary are self-consistent and plausible, but, by taking the weirdest parts of many real-world languages, it ends up feeling deeply alien. Get rid of the fun axioms and the costumes, and you still have something recognizable as, and worthy of attention as, Klingon.

Of course, that drives off all the people who are in it for the bloodwine, but your Tolkien-style language nerds are still going to value it because they're in it for the language.

I believe that answer short-circuits the rest of the thought experiment.

The AC filing notes that although important literary works have been translated to Klingon, the meaning has to change to conform with backstory concepts about Klingon culture.

I don't see this in the filing. Possibly I missed it, but I think you may be referring to this passage:

Speaking and writing in Klingon is not simply a matter of transposing words from a different language, either; it has an unusual grammatical structure that provides a different connotation than other languages. For example, the Sesame street theme song lyrics “Sunny day, chasing the clouds away” translates into Klingon as "Day of the daytime star, the clouds are filled with dread and forced to fiee."

...but the filing is clear that this translation is not imposed by "backstory concepts about Klingon culture", but by the grammatical structure and vocabulary in the language itself. Excise all evidence of Paramount/CBS IP from the Klingon language, and you still have to translate the Sesame Street opening this way. (I do not know enough Klingon to verify this is true, but it is what the filing says, and seems entirely plausible from what I do know of Klingon.)

And where did they did the "filled with dread" from? No where do the original lyrics speak of the clouds emotional ennui.

I just don't get the supposed anger from Vic over $70,000 when it's publicly stated that this cost much more than that. It was known before it was made that more than $70,000 was raised to make it.

Where would a cost of $70,000 come from, and if Alec is creating this drama, why wouldn't he boast of it raising and costing more than $100,000?

Neil

Frankly, I think it @bonesmccoy2014 might be attempting to frighten @TREKZONE.org into being silent on the topic of Axanar.
I won't be frightened off. I know that I have done nothing wrong and that when you start reporting on an issue you are going to draw criticism and complements. I've known for a long time now that the Axafaithful will only believe Alec Peters.

That's what I'm wondering. And that's probably not information many people would be privy to. Certainly not Vic. Alec would know the real cost though, wouldn't he?

Neil

But if it only cost $70K, why would he have needed to shift $10K worth of donor perks to the first Axanar movie Kickstarter? Leaves about $43K unaccounted for.
