Alec Peters wants to make a professional Star Wars fan film. You heard it here first.

Star Wars fan film 'Do's and 'Don't's

  • Do be original. Feel free to put your own spin on the Star Wars franchise and make sure what you create is original and doesn’t contain [third party] materials protected by copyright or other intellectual property rights.
Hmm...

    • Please do not include any references to Star Trek®.

*Snigger*
  • Don't be rude or use profanity. Avoid bad language, rude gestures and other inappropriate stuff.
Han: "I guess there are worse things an Imperial could call you."
Leia: "Sure, I'll tell you. They called me 'Queen Bitch Whore' of the Rebellion."
  • Don't go too long. 5 minutes max!

It makes me think, alright. It makes me think you're an idiot, Alec, if you think Lucasfilm allowing Star Wars fans to make 5-minute parodies with a strict list of rules is comparable to CBS turning a blind eye to full-length movies and continuation series of their property as long as people play by the unwritten common-sense rules.

Axanar's spokesman, Mike Bawden, replied to my email request for confirmation about Rob Burnett's "all production is halted" post. He wouldn't confirm the "indefinitely halted" part, saying it all depends on what happens after Axanar's answer to the legal complaint is filed on Monday. I updated my wiki article to add his quotes » http://bit.ly/axahalt

"a way to work things out with Paramount and CBS." Yeah, that will happened.

Is there anything that would motiviate CBS to actually work out any kind of deal? I really don't see anything. It seems like a pretty black and white situation to me, without any real wiggle room for Axanar.

There's nothing in the Star Wars fan film 'Do's and 'Don't's about selling ship models, coffee or patches either. You know what this mean don't you?

Axanar is giving what the fans want. That alone should motivates CBS to surrender their IP.

Makes me think what? That Mr. Peters should be legally able to make a 5 minute version of "Star Trek: Axanar"?
Here are the Star Wars Fan Film contest rules: (And look at the last one under "Dont's")

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE HELPFUL TIPS
Do's

  • Do protect yours and others’ privacy. If you are including names in your Video, say only your first name and please don't mention anyone else's name or other personal information or include them in your Video (including appearing in or contributing to the Video) without first obtaining their written permission (or if they are a minor, the written permission of their parent/guardian).

  • Do be original. Feel free to put your own spin on the Star Wars franchise and make sure what you create is original and doesn’t contain third party materials protected by copyright or other intellectual property rights.
  • Do be careful. Take caution when creating your Video. Make sure not to shoot any violent activities or dangerous stunts that put you and/or others at risk of getting hurt. For your safety and the safety of others, don't try any risky moves.

  • Do use sound materials from the Pack.If you want to use music or soundclips in your Video, only use sound materials provided in the Pack on the Website. Please do not include any sound materials that are not from the Pack or you will be disqualified.

  • Have fun!
Dont's
  • Don't show any brands or logos, famous landmarks, buildings, books, works of art etc. That means no visible/recognizable use anywhere in the Video of brands on clothes, sneakers, in the background, or other things which may be subject to third party intellectual property rights, such as (for example) famous landmarks, buildings or works of art. Please do not include any references to Star Trek®.

  • Don't include any names and/or likenesses of any person other than you in the Submission without first obtaining written permission (this includes not using images/voices of famous people). You will be responsible for getting written permission from any person included in your Video (or their parent/guardian in the case of minors).

  • Don't be rude or use profanity. Avoid bad language, rude gestures and other inappropriate stuff.

  • Don’t use any sound materials that are not from the Pack.

  • Don't go too long 5 minutes max

No, CBS doesn't need a deal. They're operating from a position of strength, and Peters has no real defense to offer. CBS has no reason to be magnanimous to Peters and Axanar.

With how they've behaved, CBS has every right to grind him down with their heel, which is something I think they should do.
