CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Looking at that Screenrant site - Somebody has posted as "Alec Peters's Secret Love Child"!

edit: No, it is not me either

I may have put my foot in my mouth, but I just couldn't help myself and responded to someone claiming the Axanar film was the Star Trek fans have been asking for - which was the post just above mine there):

Axanar is the trek film I have been asking for. I loved the concept.
It’s the way that they have misused the IP and put other fan productions in danger that has upset me.

From the screenrant site:

Both the press release and Peter’s statement can be found on the AXANAR online press room: axanarpr.com

Another web site? Didn't these people have something better to do than set up web sites and post PR materials? Like, oh, say, making the damn film? When you need a web site dedicated solely to press releases, it's a pretty damn good indication that your'e not a fan production anymore.

You're a business.

One possible outcome of this ordeal that might be positive, and something I would probably push for if I was at CBS: the creation of a Fan-Film management team, someone who can work with the community to ensure proper adherence to guidelines. Maybe if they like these productions, favored ones get placement at official "Fan Film Festival Events" at Star Trek conventions. Maybe CBS/Paramount could even support them with free marketing: talking about them on social media, for example. This way, like Lucasfilm, the rights-holders themselves can control the conversation.

I would welcome this, providing that creative liberty remains with film creators in terms of length and subject matter. We want to tell our stories in the way we want to tell them. I'd hate for someone to tell us that we can't do any "Amok Time" stories or that they have to be "no more than ten minutes" in length.

The concept certainly has promise, but was not what I was "asking for." Me? I'd like a return to non-serialized Trek, to be honest.

Axanar's concept though is interesting, i'm just not really looking for more stories set in Trek's past. And it certainly would not be worth seeing if produced by amateurs. Certainly there are some nice people involved, but one needs good producers and a truly professional project leader to help shape the ideas into a piece of high quality storytelling.

The star wars prequels are a perfect example of a great cast, the best FX studio and great crew-- who turned out dreck because the producers didn't do their jobs.

Well then you wouldn't like the way Lucasfilm is running their fan-film community either. I would absolutely restrict length just as Lucas has done. Basically, what you're asking for is carte blanche. But if you want the studio to support fan films, you have to accept that there will be some rules and restrictions.

Gotta spend those donation dollars somewhere, there's only so much carpet you can buy...

As far as I’m aware they did not use public donations for the carpet.
They only used the profits they made from selling coffee. That makes it ok.

Do you see those 4 carpet tiles over there in the far corner?

I PAID FOR THEM! :o

I have a feeling this is exactly what is going to happen. If fan films survive the lawsuit.

Actually, the length requirement as I understand it is for their contest only.

This just posted. I'm starting to wonder if that's really Alec Peters. "Crap fanfilms"? He can't be THAT unhinged, can he?

I hope that is not Alec. He used to have a good working relationship with New Voyages so I would be surprised if he would call them crap. But then again, he is Alec.

Update: If that was him he would have deleted that by now.

I am 100% sure it's a fake.
1.) Alec prefers to use caps for emphasis instead of asterisks.
2.) Alec does not end his sentences with ellipses.
3.) In another post, which is far more likely to be his, Alec spoke well of other fan films.
4.) Alec knows what a period is.

Also, check out some of the other posts in the thread. Fake Alec apparently forgot everything he knew about good grammar.

Edit to add:
(Photobucket won't let me upload a screenshot, so you'll have to settle for a quote.)

Are you stupid or what…?

CBS have failed to give the fans what they want and I have tried to do it instead and now they sue me… The Axanar team have suggested suing CBS in counter for failing to live up to the promise

1.) Ellipses before a question mark.
2.) Singular/plural confusion ("have" instead of "has")
3.) Bizarre sentence structure...ended with ellipses.
4.) The same singular/plural confusion as before.
5.) A statement about a lawsuit so frivolous that even Axanar Productions wouldn't suggest it and an oddly worded statement at that.
6.) No period.

It's seriously like someone's doing a bad parody of Peters and failing horribly.

That's good to hear. So does the SR comment system let multiple people post under the same name, then?

Yes. You just fill in a name and email address. There's no login.

Edit to add:

And now someone's proving a point by posting as...Alec Peters. The comment reads:

Unfortunately, it looks like anyone can post under Alec’s name here because there’s no email validation or anything. Don’t assume anything you see under Alec’s name is actually from him (this certainly isn’t). I didn’t post any other fake Alec Peters stuff, though. If you don’t like Alec, at least make sure you don’t like him because of something he actually did.

Fake Alec Peters has given up on any semblance of poor parody and just turned into your garden variety troll. Of course that's all he (?) ever was. Someone who truly wanted to make people think it was Alec posting would have put more work into mimicking his style.

Real Alec has posted more than enough damning things on his blog, and on podcasts, and in print, and pretty much everywhere else he was before a month ago . There's no need to make anything up.
Pretty much what I was just about to post.

That said, AP already has plenty of rope to hang himself. He doesn't need any help.
