CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Note - one of the conditions of the extension is there can be no filming during it.

This explains his post of a filming delay. Legal representation may also mean a sudden drop in communication, if I were to make a guess (explaining his post being deleted).

Again, speculation, but i'd guess a good a attorney would tell their client to be silent during this period, or at least have every communication (including social media) be approved for release.

Right now is not the time for them to be engaged in a public war of words with fans, supports or critics. Deal with the suit, then move on from there.

But can they still buy carpet?!?

I'm impressed that they seemed to get a heavy hitter involved, though I don't believe they are doing it pro-bono for a second. This is something the donors are paying for.

I do believe that with this kind of representation, this will be the end of fan films. CBS simply won't want to deal with this hassle ever again.

It's certainly a possibility-- maybe he wants to take everyone else down with him and blame it all on CBS.

That said, just hiring an attorney does not mean much of anything. He could be hiring an attorney as a show of force to intimidate CBS and get them to back off a bit; perhaps he hired a lawyer simply to have quality representation during settlement talks.

Doubtful, I know. Based on everything said to date, Axanar's team will be fighting this tooth and nail until the end, possibly dragging every fan film with them...

I imagine they can buy and install carpet, yes.

As for the rest - unknown.

But yeah, things may change in the fan film community.

I'm afraid you may be right. I didn't want to believe it unitl now :censored: Alec Peters and his scorched earth strategy. :barf2:

You know Prelude To Axanar displayed an interesting approach to a fan production: something of a documentary style like something one might see on the History channel. Something like that could have been done affordably.

But they lost sight of what they were supposed to be doing and didn't seem to see what they could have done.

Now all that donated money will be wasted and some people's reputations ruined.

Now that you mention it, this could be his defense strategy: if he claims the film would be a History Channel style documentary, I wonder if that would qualify as transformative enough. Very interesting.

Anyone with legal expertise care to chime in there?

I wonder. Can Peters use the Crowdfunded money for his legal battle? I wouldn't think so, but who's staking him to a high powered lawyer otherwise?

Yeah, but it's also plenty of time for @oswriter to return!

Neil

I doubt that is going to happen. It sounded very serious, and very final. I wish him the best. Ultimately, this problem is so First World Problem, it's ridiculous. I'm including myself in this, but, essentially this is a law suit about adult children who want to play dress up and film it. And when told to stop, there has been a lot of childish reaction.

About a movie with grown men and women playing dress up of their favorite TV show.

Oswriter doesn't deserve any threat because he's writing about it.

So they are willing to take cases pro bono. Point Peters.

And consider this: a well-respected attorney would not take a case pro-bono if they didn't think they could win.
