CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Why keep the facility operating during the lawsuit? Why put 150k into it? Why not sublet it, even if for a small loss? Why not fulfill patches out of a garage? Wouldn't fan staff come back, or be replaceable? Won't costumes store, oh I don't know, say for example if you had a company that could do such things?

The business drive is laid bare by this. A fan film wouldn't loose anything by cutting its expenses drastically during the lawsuit. The only reason to keep the studio open is to bootstrap its finances into being a viable business.

Presumably, the facility still has use as the headquarters of PropWorx.

Because Robert (Meyer) Burnett still needs somewhere to store his collection of Hot Toys/sleep it off.

I am loving that kid on the front row, clearly bored to tears, and playing on a tablet/ipad and the three at the back busying themselves on their phones. The amount of people actually paying attention is only twice the amount of people on the panel.
Yeah. Has the time this picture was taken been confirmed to be while the panel was in progress? (It's not yet up on YouTube. Or rather I haven't found it yet)

If this is true, then Alec should do like every other capable and responsible adult and work for the damn money himself. I wouldn't be surprised if Lane gets a call from Ranahan to cease and desist fairly soon.
I am retired and I get over 1500/month from Social security. The amount I get is based on the highest 35 years I worked. (I actually earned money in about 43 years. I would imagine most of you are on track to have that many years of work.) I also had retirement funds in the stock market, which was used to purchase Star Trek screen-used items, which was then used to buy my condo.

I was thinking about Alec's retirement and how he does not seem to have had very many years of paid employment. Do you suppose he would report income if he could keep it tax-free? He might not even be eligible for Social Security at all. At 55, he is past his prime. What do people think he will do when/if he retires?

Look like the picture from the Tampaxanar Tweet WAS genuine as if you just watch a few seconds of the youtube video (which was all I could stand) - there's the same kid in the front row (from the photo) more engaged with his Tablet then with the Panel. :guffaw:

^^^ Hey, thanks!!

The applause detected at the end supports the, um.., extremely small turnout the picture shows. (and the kid :) still looking at his pad/pod screen)

So it was the Fan Film Panel instead of the Axanar panel that Tampaxanar called it?

I believe it was taken by independent blogger and impartial onlooker Jonathon Lane. It's possibly the best one he could find. If the place got a lot fuller he doesn't appear too busy to take a better photograph to capture it. That's him sat next to Alec Peters. Whether his hand is underneath Peters backside for portions of the video I really couldn't say.

:lol: As well as seeing Mr. Lane taking a pic I also saw the defendant take a pic w his phone. Then gave the appearance of texting on the same phone. Also seeming to text other times too. I couldn't see anything below the tabletop line because of the table drape so I wasn't able to notice anything about the hip area.

Edit:
I just noticed Mr. Lane's, urm... extended commentary, about the production's litigation was interrupted by the host to turn the mic over to another panelist.

Because they engaged lawyers at the start of the year who advised them a defence was possible.

Is that not obvious?

That would not be an obstacle to shutting down operations and getting a sublessor while there is no income. A fan film would not have a problem with this. Only business motivations other than the fan film would justify keeping the place open.

As mentioned, operating Propworx there would be one consideration. But that should be paid for from its operating budget, which probably can't sustain keeping the whole facility rather than subletting.

IMO the reason for keeping it open is to not lose momentum on the for profit business, not as Mr. Lane suggests, to keep the place on hot standby for Axanar.

I suggest this is a video worth watching. It has some quite telling moments.

I posted on Jan 9th (the exact moment I walked back from my support of this production and defendant) that I was calling bs on the explanations being provided me by the production and defendant about everything. Especially the 'It's always been this.' 'It's never been that.' 'It's ludicrous to think.' Etc. I stopped buying the 'It's always going to cost more' as The Rationalization/Excuse. (well, no I know that is generally the case but not to the extreme this production was taking it) I posted 'It's the money. Every questionable thing about this is directly due to the overwhelming amount of money we sent the defendant. It is the massive amount of overfunding that corrupted this production.'

Since then I have seen no reason to believe 'The best ever made' dream. Or even a natural mission creep.

It was the money.

From the above video of the October 30, 2016 Comikaze LA Comic-Con Fan Film Panel:
aprx 26:00 (a little after)
the defendant: We were going to make it for $20K but it ended up costing $120K (Prelude)
Host: Why?
the defendant: Because we got $101K

27:52
$5K on cast
$15K on makeup
$30K-$35K on perks.
"When I consult I say '10%. You never spend more than 10% on perks. Well, we blew 'that' out of the water"
"And then there was all the marketing."

28:30
"And then we're like 'Oh, let's do it in a studio'. Well, that studio would cost us like $10K, and most of the crew was professional and you gotta feed 'em. That was like $3K for a two day shoot."

28:47
"Then we're like 'Well, we want to do it at SDCC. Well, let's rent a theater.' That's $5K for the theater."

29:00 And then the defendant says:
“It the old business saying that Expenses rise to meet income. And it is so true. Whatever money you have you will want to spend more. So our budget was $20K, we got $100K, so we spent $120K”

Boom! Mic drop!

I summarized the video on this AxaMonitor piece I posted yesterday, in which he admits building the studio was a bad call, and that Axanar suffered from mission creep.

Not to mention how he accosted the Mary Sue writer after the panel, complaining about the "hatchet job" the website did on Axanar a few months ago. He didn't realize the camera was still recording.

So to recap:
1. It was Christian Gossett's fault he built the studio;
2. It was Elon Musk's fault for not offering him more money for his previous company;
3. It was CBS' fault for not taking Axanar "for free";
4. It was George Lucas' fault that he wasn't "born a Star Wars fan";
5. It was Teresa Jusino's fault for writing mean things about him on the Internet;
6. It was Allyson Gronowitz's fault for being a woman and standing in his line of sight;
7. It was the fault of every Hollywood studio for producing bad movies; and
8. It was the fans' fault for giving him too much money.
