CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Axanar won most of the awards at Treklanta two years ago. Vic Mignona won Best Actor , but Axanar took home almost all the rest of the awards.

so Treklanta has a "film festival" appropriate to imply is comparable to arts film festivals which ordinary people think of when they hear those words?

If AP really did get some "bad news" I would guess (since that's all anyone can do at this point) that Ranahan&Co have read him their version of the Riot Act. "You're looking down the barrel of a summary judgement, we're sick of your act and you can forget about us representing you on any kind of appeal. Look for a copy of our office expense report in a few days." Anyone else care to speculate?
Pretty much - after reading the court summary of the Settlement Conference; I'd say Alec Peters is getting hit with the reality of the situation - IE Axanar is dead; and if he wants to have any sort of a life after this, and not be living on the street, he better take the deal C/P are offering. I still say that Alec Peters ego will probably take over and he will end up not settling because let's face it - anyone with a functioning brain wouldn't have let the situation get to this point in the first place.

I will say that even if there is a settlement, Alec Peters could STILL screw it up in that you can be sure one of the main terms will be:

"You can't talk about or disclose the settlement terms publicly in any way."

Because I'm sure if CBS/Paramount settle, they don't want to give a road map to any other idiot who might be thinking about using any of their IPs (Star Trek or otherwise) - and given how Alec Peters is, I seriously doubt he'll be able to adhere to that for very long.

The case isn't being decided on the basis of Axanar's quality. Unfortunately the issue was muddied due to JJ/Justin Lin stepping forward. From that point onward it might have seemed a plausible tactic to use the threat of fan backlash as a lever to get CBS/P to step away, but as far as the technicalities of the case, Axanar winning awards will not get them off the hook.

LOL - I knew Johnathan Lane was an ardent supporter of Axanar; but I didn't know he actually and physically worked for them too (Taken from thee comments section of his latest 'Fan Film Factor Blog entry:

You didn't know he was one of their stooges? He was in charge of updating the Axanar website before the "independent" Fan Film Factor started up. He's nothing but a Peters puppet.

That's why I had to laugh at his attempt to challenge the new fan films guidelines. It was really just Peters trying to stage a backdoor campaign to get the rules weakened. :guffaw:

No I did not until now. Given that I too have to laugh harder at the claim that 'Fan Film Factor' is the "only unbiased source for news about the CBS/Paramount V. Axanar lawsuit" per Alec Peters' claims. :rommie:

Well, I do see your point. Now Treklanta does call theirs ST Indie Fan Film Awrds, and being an ordinary person myself I didn't find myself equating it to art film festivals. The defendant did say 47 film awards but I didn't find myself equating them to art film festivals either. Nor do I think I would do so if I saw them listed under awards on iMDB. Though it is conceivable others might.

So I do see your point. While I'm not sure I agree with it (as of this posting anyway) I do see your reasoning on this.

Does he really always qualify his claims with the word "fan" in front of "film festival"? I thought generally he claims "film festival" awards without qualification.

So is anyone (not Peters of course) attempting to make short Axanar\Garth fan film that conforms with the film guidelines? Just wanted to see if anyone would be bold enough to legitimately tackle that story. The thinking being, that thousands of fans wanted to see that story but can't now. Now that Peters is out of it, can someone else do it, in a effort to placate some of those fans.

I'm sure someone MIGHT, but they'd have to crowdfund again and I don't know if they would be quite as successful this time around. Oh I'm sure some would though, smh.

Vic Mignogna and James Cawley are already set up. If they could fit it in within the guidelines it sure would be a brilliant way of giving Alec Peters the finger.

They are a bunch of donors who wanted the story passionately, and they have shown they are willing to spend money. Perhaps some among them would want to do it for themselves. They still need an actual story, though.

Hum.. I don't remember. Will start paying attention again, with special attention to things I come upon from btl. (before the lawsuit).

I have this bookmarked:
Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar world premiere and Q&A at SDCC
Reported by Jay Cochran - 2014.07.15
"Being billed as an "independent film,"
...........
"PRELUDE TO AXANAR is a 20 minute short film that will give viewers a historical look at the events leading up to the Battle of Axanar, the central event of the film Axanar, a 90 minute feature to be filmed later this year. Shot like a History Channel special, Prelude to Axanar will be Star Trek like you have never seen it before, showing the central characters of Axanar giving both a historical and personal account of the war. Set 20 years before the time of James T. Kirk's command of the Enterprise, "Axanar" is set in the last year of the Four Years War, the conflict with the Klingons that almost saw the end of the Federation only 80 years after its founding. How did Starfleet build its fleet? How did they hold off a Klingon fleet that had been conquering star systems for centuries? What role did the various founding planets play in Starfleet? Why were the Constitution class ships so important to Starfleet? How did Garth of Izar come to be regarded as the greatest Starfleet Captain of his time?"

Wait. The production's promised movie:
"Set in the Star Trek universe Axanar is a ground breaking independent film that proves the idea that a studio doesn’t need to spend millions of dollars to produce a feature quality production. Axanar will be the first non-CBS/Paramount produced Star Trek to look and feel like a true Star Trek movie."
is essentially writing a non-CBS approved history of that canon time and those canon characters, presented with the look and feel like a true ST movie which 'definitely' could conflict with my own reception of a real CBS owned Trek history of those same characters & history already in CBS trek canon if they decided to make new ST for us in that time frame.

Hum..

Anyway..
Correct me if I'm wrong, that world premiere showing was not even held at SDCC. "(just a 15 minute walk from the San Diego Convention Center) during the weekend of San Diego Comicon" That may have no significance as maybe other SDCC offerings are also shown elsewhere? Or is this conflating (is that the right word) something non-sanctioned at SDCC with the actual SDCC?

EDIT: Found it:
Category Archives: Film Festivals & Awards
Prelude to Axanar: Long Beach Indie International Film Festival
Prelude to Axanar has made it into another film festival
Prelude to Axanar Selected for Sci Fi Film Festival 2015
Axanar’s making an impact at film festivals across the world
Prelude to Axanar accepted into Glendale and Tri-cities International Film Festivals
Prelude to Axanar continues to reach new audiences, and has just been accepted into two international film festivals
Axanar scores 5 Nominations at Action on Film Festival
The Action on Film Festival (September 18-27, 2015) announced their nominations today. PRELUDE TO AXANAR was nominated for
Geekie Award for the Best Short Film
Scruffy City Film And Music Festival
World Premiere of Prelude to Axanar at San Diego Comicon + Q&A with Cast and Crew
(see above quote and personal suggestion this is an inaccurate and misleading statement)

(all the immediately above quotes are directly from the production site)

So, yeah, I now agree there is a possible-to-probable conflation of Film Festivals with Fan Film Festivals that could mislead an ordinary person such as myself when hearing the defendant say Prelude has garnered 47 film festival awards from around the world. :) Yep.

History is repeating itself as AP also used the same tactic of hiding behind a hand puppet (Dan Benton) on a prop blog.

I asked Mike Bawden (Axanar P.R. rep.) if he is being paid with donor funds. He answered he isn't, his services are free but later it turns out he's been promised a stake in the studio as compensation and he's one of the "secret" studio investors. NuDiana denied having any involvement with the studio yet it turns out she has a studio position. Johnathon Lane is directly involved with Axanar.

The dishonesty on the part of AP and his current circle of like minded liars reminds me of a quote:

"Oh! What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive" - Walter Scott
