News CBS All Access Wants Emmys For Star Trek: Discovery

i'd like to take this opportunity to thank CBS for using "woke" as a selling point for emmy voters:

I'm inclined to agree with you regards the streaming aspect to Discovery. However if Emmys, other awards etc. are allocated to shows across the various platforms then so be it. If a streamed or paid access show gets an Emmy (as an example) it makes little difference to me to be honest. I watch Star Trek because it's Star Trek.

Does Discovery deserve an Emmy? Truly - maybe if its competition is of the same level it might. I can't think of any aspect where it excels though. The production is dark samey to other shows. Costuming - average. Makeup? Not that great really. The Klingons were pretty awful. Some of the external visuals have been all right. Acting? The median is good but not sure if any one actor is truly outstanding. Script and writing? Patchy, inconsistent with trite dialogue and unsympathetic characterisation. This show so needs a kick in the pants. It needs some bloody life pumped into it. A little joy, a little love.

You pretty well sum up why I don't think DISCO really deserves any Emmy nods. Jason Isaacs certainly elevates some pretty mediocre material, but otherwise, the show at its' best, is just adequate. Competently done, if unexceptional. Could be worse, but could be better.

At worst, it's an absolute chore to watch.

Even though it is wrapped in allegory, I find it incredible how much more on the nose TOS was vs what we have now. Watching "Errand of Mercy" last night, Kirk argues for the right to wage war and Ayelbourne essentially calls him a fool by pointing out he wants the right to kill millions.

I think they were saying whatever they could to make the show sound smart and progressive. And I guess it would've been, twenty-five or thirty years ago.

Damn, I forgot how unreadable the subtitles were.

I am watching Defiance right now on Amazon Prime. It has a shitton of subtitles due to the use of alien language. But for some reason, it works completely smoothly, and I have no issue following both the dialogue and the emotional subtext of the alien speech.
