Back in '66 I knew about Star Trek from a friend of mine that watched but at my house I didn't have any say about what we watched. I either watched what 'they' wanted or I did something else with my time.
By the time it came to syndication I had my own B&W TV in my room and total say about what I watched, then started my Trek.
My mom once came in and asked what I was watching, I told her Star Trek and gave her a short description of what it was about, (cautiously avoiding any smart-ass remarks about how we could have watched it back when it was new
)
Within a few moments of her looking at it she asked if she could watch it with me. By episodes end she was hooked, suggested we watch the next episodes out in the living room on the color TV! To this day she and I are the biggest Trek fans in all the family and relatives combined.
