Castle season 8 discussion thread - spoilers

Well, I saw the ending...and it made me remember how awesome Beckett is. She just kept firing after getting hit. That was cool. Why would you kill off a character like that and sack the actress?!

....But other than that, damn that was tacked-on. The children seemed like a dream sequence. The editing was awkward.

Ah well. Once upon a time, this show was unmissable for me. I'll remember those days.

Yea, pretty much. For us informed individuals, we know who was signed on and who wasn't. However, the general public probably doesn't and if it ended with both Castle & Beckett shot, it would have been a cliffhanger of a summer. But then again with social media these days, I guess even the masses would find out about who was not coming back.

I'm sure the majority of the viewers knew of the mess, it was very public. I'd even bet the fan reaction to it was a reason the show was canceled.

What pisses me off are the horrible writers went 'We filmed an alternate ending". No you didn't, it wasn't an alternate ending, they had there cliffhanger and tacked on 10 seconds. Soon bad!

Still better then watching a season 9 with Beckett being dead. "The show is an epic love story" where the leads hate each other and you were planning all season to kill off the co-star.

Just gross.

Why even bother to have the gunshot scene in it? Why not skip that and just show the happy ending? It only works as a cliffhanger if there's going to be another episode

Probably because the cancellation was done at the last minute and they only had a few days/weeks to transform that cliffhanger into a series finale. Or they were just demotivated and demoralized by that point and only did the bare minimum amount of work required.

Pretty weak coda at the end. Totally agree that they should have cut the 'both get shot' scene from the episode and filmed another 30 seconds of coda instead. Totally didn't matter, twist for no reason (once the spinoff was killed). And the coda as filmed was just a total 10 second afterthought, no dialog, and then 'every writer needs a muse' sorta thing. Once cancelled, would have liked that to be a minute or two instead.

Either way, much happier than I would have been had they killed Beckett and spun it off...

Agree completely!

Question from upthread...somebody mentioned that they didn't feel Nathan Fillion had behaved well in this. Can somebody explain? Thanks.

Guessing they wanted to see solidarity and him refusing to go on without her, rather than the "good luck, we'll make it work" type response he gave?

I heard humors that Fillion couldn't work with her and was the problem that led to her leaving, but I find that hard to believe, he comes off incredibly sweet and down to earth in interviews. Then again, he IS an actor...

Most people go "If they fire you, I'll leave". She was fired and hours later went "Bye bitch! I want to do this show for several more years".

Plus there have been rumors that they haven't been getting along for seasons now and that's why they don't work together that much. Pretty much all reports point to him. (I feel it was both until the last month)

A show is employs more than two people, though. The show getting cancelled puts hundreds of people out of a job.

Thanks for the responses.

There's only one problem with that - he was already under contract. That's only a card you can play *before* you sign. At first glance, this scenario is very much like last year's when Stana didn't sign her contract until several weeks after Nathan. Was it because she wasn't offered one? Or because she was negotiating? None of us know that. But my thinking is that there's nothing negative about Nathan signing a contract he was offered. He's got bills to pay.

Rumors? Not putting any faith in them without being able to examine a source. Far too easy for 'I wonder if X happened' to turn into 'I heard that X happened'.

ETA: This doesn't sound negative toward Stana at all and is more than many actors might have said in similar situations where I've noticed that usually there's radio silence.

Finally got around to watching the rest of the season and boy did that coda really suck. No transition, just tacked on to the end of a cliffhanger. The choice of big bad was also clearly not intended when they first introduced him. It was like he was the biggest guest star they could bring back at the last minute. They never needed a character higher up than Bracken. It was like on 24 when they brought in Will Patton out of nowhere as the grand master behind four seasons of the show.

ABC really dropped the ball in all the shows they cancelled after they had already finished filming. That's just not the right way to treat your shows and viewers.

Such is TV. NBC canceled Law and Order and never gave it an ending. That was 20 years! CBS is the only one I can think of that gave CSI a TV movie.

Farscape got Peacekeeper Wars. Firefly got Serenity.

Those are actually completely different cases. Farscape was done independently and Serenity was done by a completely different company.

Very few shows now get an ending like CSI got with the movie.

So her death would have been faked. I was thinking that but it seems silly. She probably wouldn't want to do a cameo after being fired from a show, so she be alive but never seen?

From TVline.com...
Question: Had Castle not been cancelled, how was the show going to explain Stana Katic’s absence as Kate next season? You previously (and ominously) hinted that none of the options being bandied about were good. —Bobbi
Ausiello: According to sources, one scenario had Kate surviving the season-ending shootout, but everyone — Rick included — would think her dead. Why the ruse? I’ll divulge that little tidbit in the next Ask Ausiello Live!
