I don't think that the show has ever changed it's just that people are tired of the lame contrivances eight seasons in.

Stupid or not it was one of the main draws of the show in its first 4 seasons due to the insane good chemistry between Fillion and Katic.
The show had this budding relationship, the Beckett's Mom murder case and later on 3XK as the main pillars because otherwise it was like any other procedural and i doubt it would have seen 4 seasons let alone 8 without these elements to set them apart.
I loved the relationship stuff in the first 4 seasons, it gave the viewers some very funny, emotional and at times heartbreaking scenes but come mid season 5 after the honeymoon phase was over it lost steam at an ever accelerating pace. They solved the big murder case so another pillar gone and then came the abysmal, soap operish season 6 (?) finale with the wedding and Castle's car crash and disappearance (for me this was the moment where the show actually jumped the shark).
Personally i believe it's only about the steady paycheck for Fillion and Katic seems to have been only roped in at the last moment and from what i hear she has a much more reduced role now.
Just yesterday i read that the current episode was an all time viewership low so apparently the audience also is becoming tired of Castle. Given that the show was only given an 8th season at the last minute i believe it will not get a 9th.
At least i can watch Castle seasons 1 - 5.5 whenever i want and enjoy fully.

Me neither. And if this was meant to test the waters in case Katic leaves, I hope they realize what a mistake it would be to continue on without her.
And here's what I don't get, why even bring in Bladwin? His character sucked the first time around. This would have been the prefect chance to try Fillion and Quinn out for a full episode.

This show is never getting a series 9 with or without the cast, so it makes no difference.
I have a great idea, she isn't around to do an episode.... then do one less episode. I don't see what the issue is, or do one more episode later. Or do an episode of Castle and the daughter on vacation in France.

With that ending, this kinda felt like a backdoor pilot for a show featuring Baldwin's character and that kid. Don't think I'd watch such a show though.

That episode sucked. After about 15 minutes I re-discovered the joy of playing Sodoku on my iPad.
What I don't get is that they seem to enjoy making Esposito and Ryan look like incompetent cops. First they embarass themselves trying to be college students, then Ryan shoots Espo in the ass, and now they get their car stolen, and apparently have to Uber themselves to a crime scene. Sad.

They're really missing a beat by not having Ron Glass guest. Not only for the Firefly reunion, but, when he was on Barney Miller, it was also the 12th precinct, AND he was an aspiring writer. How cool would it be if they needed to bring Detective Harris (now a published author of police dramas maybe?) out of retirement to help solve an old 12th precinct case?

I'm up to the Adam Baldwin one. This show sucks now. I'll stick around to the bitter end, probably because I'm guessing the end of S8 will be the bitter end, but if they somehow managed to get another season I think I'm out, much as Fillon is still a joy to watch.

Yeah, that was pretty awful. I think the showrunners now decide on scripts based on combining what's up next in their Netflix queue.
