Casting Pike's Number One

david kelly

Lieutenant Junior Grade

I'll start by saying that Number One is my favorite Trek character. Despite the fact she's only seen in the Menagerie and the Cage, there's an aura of mystery about her that just enthralls me. I feel such a character offers up much potential. I love her intelligence and her confidence in her ability. I like how she calmly takes things in and analyzes them like a computer. Just like Vina derided her for. What fascinates me most is why is she so emotionally detached. To the point that even the Telosians would comment on it. If they do bring back this character, I want her to be presented the way she was in the Cage. There really isnt any actress I can think of that could do justice to the character---at least none that I'm aware of. More than anything I hope Burnham isn't Pike's Number One. Anyway, I'd rather have a more interesting reason for her emotional detachment than just being raised on Vulcan.

How about Alice Krieg. Give her role outside off the Borg. I wouldn't even mind another ex-Borg Queen in Sussana Thompson.

At 63, she might be a bit old to play a Lieutenant. Likewise for Thompson who's 60.

The first officer for Pike was only a Lieutenant? That sounds odd. I do wonder how many years this encounter takes place after "The Cage." Thompson might be 60 but she looks younger to me so I could buy her as being 40 years old or so. I got to admit i'm not sure how old the character was suppose to be. I'm not so great at picking ages. Once someone reaches their mid 20's they look the same to me for another good 15 to 20 years.

Yep
The Cage said:
ONE: She's replacing your former yeoman, sir.
PIKE: She does a good job, all right. It's just that I can't get used to having a woman on the bridge. No offence, Lieutenant. You're different, of course.
Majel Barrett was about 32 when she played Number One.

I wouldn't be surprised if Number One was absent from the Enterprise, just as she was in the 2009 movie. I can see them having Spock as Pike's first officer.

Well Gene's original setup was a much flatter rank structure where everyone was a similarly qualified astronaut and an officer but you had a Captain, and a few lieutenants about. The closer match to the USN structure didn't appear until later. Consider it part of early installment weirdness, like laser pistols and gooseneck viewers.

You know what I never understood. Riker was a full commander and a first officer but when Chockatay became first offer he was only a Lt. Commander. I'm not even sure what rank most first officers are even suppose to be in the 24th century. Is it full commander or Lt. Commander and Riker was only special since he was on the Flagship.

You can be the Captain of a Federation starship without actually holding the specific rank of Captain, so I don't see why a Lieutenant couldn't hold the position of Executive Officer.

We saw a lot of first officers with the rank of Lt Cmdr over the years, including Sisko on the Saratoga. It probably has something to do with the size and complexity of the command.

Enterprise D had a crew of over 1000, Voyager had a crew of 150.

The TOS Enterprise had a crew of 430, and Spock was initially a Lt. Commander.

Pike's Enterprise had just over 200, Number One was a Lieutenant.

Janeway probably made Chakotay a Lt. Commander so Tuvok wouldn't out rank him.

Given the stripes on their sleeves, debateably Pike was a Commander, and so was Kirk in WNMHGB.

It would have made sense if Janeway had been a Commander.

Chakotay was like an emergency First Officer... but even so he replaced Cavit ,who was also a Lieutenant Commander.
