Casting announced for Stargate Origins

It wouldn't surprise me if this web series explains why the stargate changed appearance between the movie and SG-1 pilot.

That seems like an odd retcon to try and patch. It just opens up more holes with why the Abydos gate changed even more (totally different symbols, DHD suddenly pops up in the middle of the room...).

Prop designs change because they're props, not real things. They're artistic creations, and artists tend to refine their work over time, or else new artists bring their own interpretations. As long as the overall item is recognizable as a Stargate, there's room to refine the precise details, and there's no need to devote stories to making excuses for the refinements.

Does young Catherine go to Abydos? It sure looks that way from the behind the scenes. The extras' costumes, tents look very Abydosian to me.

They meet Amon-Ra, a deeply racist characateur attempting to unite the System Lords by using an alien superfungi to enhance Goa'uld hyperdrive so they can enslave the universe instantly.

All that can stop him is a pyschotic, super mysterious new Colonel of dubious origin and past who is tasked to SG-31 to stop him.

so Syfy doesn't want anymore Dark Matter because they didn't own the show but will spend them money on reheating the Stargate franchise?

no thanks syfy.

SyFy has nothing to do with this. In fact MGM wanted to include Dark Matter on the Stargate Command platform, but time ran out before they could make a deal.

I've heard they might be changing it from a Stargate-specific All Access pass to a general MGM All Access pass, from summer 2018 onwards.
I'd definitely find that more tempting than a purely SG platform, especially if they added the Bond movies to it.

Yeah, I had the same thought.

"respecting" established continuity is not the same as "no-retcons" - certainly they have to go through the gate or it wouldn't be Stargate. I'm not too fussed on why Catherine doesn't remember the gate from way-back when; in all honesty it probably would be best to more or less ignore Daniel cracking the gate in SG:M and just tie it in with SG1.
Personally, I'd rather see a new feature or a new hour-long tv show.

I wonder who they'll get to score it, since Joel passed away a few years ago.

Neal Acree worked with him on the various series, doing additional music. Maybe they'll keep it in-family, so to speak.

I really want to be excited about this since SG1 was my first binge into the genre and I still keep up with the Stargate novels, but I just want more than 10 ten-minute episodes.

I'm curious what a reboot would even look like these days. Would it have the lovable mix of comedy and character adventures like SG1 and Atlantis, or would it be more serious like Universe? It seems like most sci-fi has steered toward the latter on television.

I feel like Universe really figure out the balance in season 2.5 between action, humor, and darker-and-edgier-ness. I still think about Young lampshading the "exact time to success" trope in one of the last episodes; "We need another fifteen seconds until we can jump." "How is that not close enough?"

I was doing some quick searching to see if I could find out who the composer is (didn't find that out) and I see that this wrapped up filming earlier this month.

Cue the chorus of tedious aholes telling anyone who has a complaint about new shows being used to launch a bunch of redundant streaming services that it's "only the cost of couple of lattes" and they should stop whining. Meanwhile, the streaming services get more and more Balkanized and costs go up for less content and fewer benefits provided.

Ah, welcome the future -- no need for DVD's or TV's, LOL -- you just have to pay for one fucking streaming service after another until you've spent more on streaming services than you probably would have spent just renting the DVD or getting them at pawn shops.

This is why (although I don't mind paying for Netflix now or CBS AA when it comes here to Canada in 2018) as I've said before, if I were running things at CBS, all or most of the cop shows/reality shows (along with Big Bang Theory, which is long in the tooth anyway) would be cancelled and Star Trek: Discovery would be on Monday nights at 9:00 PM, with all of the other shows mentioned for CBS AA also put on the network, instead of just willy-nilly putting Discovery and these shows on a streaming service.

As for this new Stargate show, shouldn't MGM be putting this on a cable outlet (a'la the new Star Wars shorts airing on Disney XD with them also being put on YouTube), or just making it into a movie instead? :vulcan:

It only took twenty years, but now Nazis are part of the Stargate franchise!

Will they actually go through the gate? Won't that make them Space Nazis?!

Hmm, definitely looks like a secret trip through the Stargate is going to happen.

Streaming is seen as the future of entertainment right now, and if these companies want to get in on that then they need something new with a name that will bring in costumers. Star Trek is probably CBS's most well known property, so it makes sense that would be one of the first things they'd go for. The only reason Disco exists is because of CBSAA, the show was made specifically to draw people to the service, so if it wasn't shown on CBSAA then it wouldn't exist.
I honestly don't know which came first Stargate Origins or the streaming service, but if the show came first then I do agree with it should be on TV. But if the service came first, then they need something to put on there, so it might as well be this. I do think it's a bit ridiculous to do a service devoted just to the Stargate franchise, I just don't see it being popular enough to sustain something like this.
