Carol Marcus

Carol wore a Starfleet uniform in STID, and was (IIRC) addressed as Lieutenant, so that tends to be a giveaway.

But since that was a sham, it might be that Carol's keel-hauling for stealing the uniform was postponed until the conclusion of the adventure, and in actual fact she was but a cunning civilian with access to daddy's uniform fabricator...
Since STID never told us that Carol was lying about being in Starfleet, I think it's safe to assume that she was genuinely in Starfleet.

As to whether or not Prime Universe Carol was ever in Starfleet, I can honestly see it either way. She's certainly sympathetic to them ("Starfleet has kept the peace for a hundred years. I cannot and will not subscribe to your interpretation of this event!"), so I could see her being a member in her younger days before she decided it wasn't for her. This also provides a convenient explanation for how she & Kirk could have met.

Yeah, I'm still going for the explanation that Carol was the "little blond lab technician" that Kirk almost married, as per WNMHGB.
I like that theory, too. Of course, she could be in Starfleet and still be a lab technician.

BTW, has anyone else noticed how many of Kirk's love interests were blonde? Ruth, Areel Shaw, Janet Wallace, Carol Marcus, Janice Rand, Deela, Rayna Kapec, Gillian Taylor... Evidently our good Captain had a type.

As far as it goes, Carol could have been a lab technician at Starfleet Academy and NOT been in Starfleet, just an employee of a given professor. But I like the idea that she had been in Starfleet, and got out for one reason or another, probably because of difficulties with being a single mom.

But then there's Edith Keeler, Janice Lester, Helen Noel, Marlena Moreau, Kelinda, Shahna, Miramanee, Antonia...

I don't think Kirk has a type more specific than "pretty lady". ;)

Well, let's see... Janice Lester was an A-1 Nutball, which is apparently why Kirk broke up with her. They did date for a year, though, IIRC.

Helen Noel is someone he apparently flirted with for a bit & then cut it off once he realized that she was a member of his crew. I'd say that the subsequent attraction was more one-way there, so in my mind that doesn't really count.

Marlena Moreau was involved with Kirk's counterpart, and we don't really know what may or may not have happened between the Prime Universe versions once Kirk got home (but considering that she was also a member of his crew, I'm guessing not much).

Kelinda is another blonde. Shahna's hair color is not natural to Earth women.

Kirk was suffering from amnesia and not in his right mind while he was romancing Miramanee.

As I recall, we never really got a good look at Antonia, but I agree that from her name she was likely a brunette (but if someone named "Leila Kolomi" can be a blonde woman with a slight English accent, I suppose all bets are off).

Edith Keeler, I'll absolutely give ya. I think she was all the more striking to Kirk for not being his usual type.

Meanwhile, I forgot a few more blondes... Lenore from "The Conscience of the King," Deela from "Wink Of An Eye," and Drusilla from "Bread and Circuses." :)

Since ST:ID did tell us that Carol was lying her pretty eyes and ears full, I think "safe" is the one word we can't apply here. But her credentials as weapons expert seemed genuine, or at least her skills were - would you even be allowed to have that skill set if you weren't part of the military? In the totalitarian interpretation of military in Star Trek, that is?

Not everyone in Starfleet is a lifer, are they? She could have done her 5 years and then went on to her research job. Five years in Starfleet looks good on a resume.

Well, considering that she was still allowed to take part in the mission after her deception was revealed, I would say that yes, JJ-Verse Carol was really, truly in Starfleet. And as you say, her weapons expertise seemed genuine. I don't see Kirk trusting her to defuse that missile with McCoy if she wasn't in Starfleet (that was after her true identity was revealed, right? I only saw STID once, and some of the exact order of it is a bit fuzzy now).

Carol Marcus was revealed to be "the Admiral's daughter" in the same phrase in which Spock recommended her for the torpedo task, yes. If anything, that ought to have made Kirk distrust her - there already was every reason to think Daddy was up to no good.

you can add Odona to the fair-haired list, and one that it's pretty assured he had a physical relationship with.

I assume the IDW comics will have her transferring off the ship prior to the events of Beyond. If not, maybe a line in the film about her having transferred to pursue a research opportunity.

I wonder now how the future will play out given that Kirk swiped Spock's death scene.
