Carol Marcus' British accent

I imagine the people of Riverside, Iowa were somewhat miffed that nuKirk was born in space, and in the year 2233 as opposed to the 2228 their monument claims.

^The 2233 date comes from The Star Trek Chronology, which picks a 2267 date for "The Deadly Years," in which Kirk gave his age as 34. It's hardly new information.

In STID, Carol said that her father raised her, but (assuming he worked out of Section 31's London office for a fair whack of time), it could still fit.

A lot of time passed between when Kirk and Carol met and when we saw her in TWOK. It's entirely possible she did have an English accent when they met and that it changed over the subsequent 20 years to a more American-sounding accent. People's accents change all the time.

Bibi Besch, the original Carol was born in Austria and spent the first six years of her life there. No doubt she had a Austrian accent at one time.

Oh come on. Better not explain it at all than explain it like that.

Linda McCartney had this odd British accent after living there for many years.

^And conversely, Marina Sirtis's normal speaking accent today, after living in the States for decades, is more American than English, though it's sort of an odd blend of the two.

Though with accents the spectrum can range from no change at all to a total change or anywhere inbetween.

Crazy idea. What if the alternate Carol Marcus has a different mother?

If Admiral Marcus wasn't involved in Section 31 in the original timeline, or simply if Section 31 didn't have a large presence in London, since the Kelvin Memorial Archive mightn't exist in an unaltered timeline anyway, perhaps he met and married a different, British woman due to visiting London more often. It's never explicitly said when Carol was born, and indeed if anything she seems younger than Kirk.

So, the alternate Carol might be really alternate. :rommie:

Huh?

It's a totally normal thing that happens to lots of people, especially if they live in different places.

Alice Eve is a year and a half younger than Chris Pine -- whereas Bibi Besch was nine years younger than William Shatner.

On the other hand, Kirk's supposed to be 26 at the time of the film, making him six years younger than Pine is at this point (since four years elapsed between films in real life but less than one year in-story). So there's really no telling how close the characters are supposed to be in age.

The real-world reason is that, although the filmmakers tested Eve with an American accent, they decided to go with her natural accent because they felt it helped sell her as a scientist. To Americans, English accent = smart.
That is so sad.

Did Americans become dumber between the 1980s and 2010s?

Considerably.

But, this thread is about Carol Marcus, so let's stick with that.:bolian:

Or it could to prevent any anti English accusations as Khan now had an English accent?

That comment was 5 days and 31 posts ago and it was mostly ignored. It's ironic that by bringing it up again to say it should not derail the thread, you allow it to potentially derail the thread.
